At the end of 10 years I think Sony will make a profit if you consider blu-ray's victory and software.

Really?
I think Sony released it with such a high price and hoping people would get two jobs to pay for it before realizing they fucked up and in complete desperation starting slashing the price until they finally got some sales.
But that's just me.

I am not sure if "paying off" is the right word to use. Sony cut the price in half in less than 3 years.
Sony is selling 250000 units a week...at lets say, 50 dollar loss. This equals 12,500,000 million loss a week.
52 weeks a year...$650,000,000 a year.
Combined with the fact that PS2 is all but a dead source of revenue and that PS3 does not have online revenue like XBL... and that both competitors are profiting from their consoles...I fail to see how things are paying off for Sony.
The thing is, because the market is polarized (SD vs HD) 90% of the 3rd party pubs can not afford to make console exclusive games. Therefore at this point both consoles will be getting the major 3rd party hits. Sony can take the lead, xbox can keep the lead...neither console is in dange of losing most 3rd party titles. Actually Xbox still has a slight advantage because its easier to develop for and costs less...therefore niche titles like Raiden IV are likely to come out for that system.
In any case, the arms race of who has the largest userbase is over....doesn't matter anymore. At this point companies need to start profiting from their hard work this gen.
I wouldnt say this was Sony's initial strategy. Their strategy expected alot of sales with the launch of the PS3 due to the success of the PS2.
But the strategy of making a slim to cut price etc.. after the huge loss since launch seems to be paying off....also due to one man, Kevin Bulter lol =P
ROFL, PS3 around in 10 year, lol
hahahahahahahaha
Excellent joke
Oh...wait...you're serious
*walks away slowly*
10 years for PS3, yeah, who's going to support it in 10 years?
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)
Can we please forget this "1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place" stuff? I think it's important to appreciate that ALL consoles right now, are doing well. Including the ps3, which is now doing gangbusters and is providing Microsoft with some serious competition.
I do think the ps3 has some staying power now. I mean it's more relevant. Before in it's lifetime, it was unknown. The public didn't know about it and weren't interested in it. Price was incredibly steep and the playstation brand was in serious trouble.
Sony managed to wing it and redeem themselves as serious competition for this generation. And that's what's important.

This has come up before... I don't have the links at hand now, but if I remember correctly Sony would have to sell an insane amount of BR discs to every single human being in developed countries to even come close to recouping PS3's losses.
The royalties on movie discs are actually not high at all... nothing compared to game software. And even with game software, the PS3 has already lost more money than the PS2 made in profit.
In short, it's not gonna happen.

Paying off? Sony is hurting majorly right now. The primary objective of any business enterprise is to make a profit, and from that perspective Sony is clearly far behind its competitors.

The machine has so much staying power that Sony can afford to slowly cut the price Is that why they dropped the price by 200 € / 33% in Europe before the PS3 even had its first holiday season? If these are slow price drops it should be amusing to see fast price drops.

those are small price drops, it have 500$ - 400$ -300$ price cuts and sony as a whole didn't loose money until the depression start to hit hard.
and compared to the 360 it have 2 price cuts in europe in 2008- they are small.

In Europe the PS3 launched for 600 € in March 2007. 7 months later, it cost 400 € (and lost 20 GB of hard drive space in the process).
If this is a slow price cut, I'm Santa Claus.
