Forums - Sony - PS3 Strategy is Starting to Pay Off

You're struggling here arent you?. Bluray if it really takes off will ensure a long ps3 lifespan. That is unless they keep cutting the price and rely on software for profits, then it would be unsustainable.

I can buy a Bluray player for half the cost of a PS3. Why would that help prolong the PS3 life-span? I am not struggling at all. It appears your argument is floundering though.

WTF?!

Alan Wake has like the same chance dude...

Umm...how exactly? Seriously, if Sony and Take-Two are trying to get this on the same level as GTA in terms of publicity, it could be a massive hit. Why take my word for it? Just look at GTA4 sales this gen. Or GTA3.

Or look at Bully... since that was made by Rockstar too... I have seen no proof that the games going to be big so why talk about it like it is? People don't know what the game is!

@ DirtyP2002

And as I said before, the PS3 is a good console. It is fun to play, but a financial failure.

It's going to take a long time to determine this.

How successful will the PS3 be in the future regarding game sales? How much of an impact will the PS3 have on Sony's sales overall, for example sales of additional HDTVs, Blu-Ray movies, surround sound audio sets, etc. Or would the HD movie war have costed Sony more without the PS3, will the PS3 have additional revenue from things like PlayTV and other still under development projects, etc?

That's a long term question. That the PS3 would require a lot of investments from Sony the first years on the market was already a given.

Don't you see the timing for coming to conclusions just isn't right and there are many different factors involved?

HD DVD was a financial failure and so was the original XBox, we can agree on this as they are of no effect today anymore, but not the PS3.

So does that mean when I look at Microsofts financial results due to the relative failure of Vista next to expectations that I should console myself with the thought that it could have meant they had extra Xbox 360 sales as Macs don't play games very well?

Btw HD DVD is winning in China...

Maybe your expectations were wrong to begin with then. I feel my personal overall expectations with regard to the PS3 so far have been realistic.

With regard to HD DVD I doubt that, but feel free to migrate to China.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

China FTW!!!

Bully =/= GTA.

If Take-Two and Rockstar's aim is to get this game up there with GTA in terms of its popularity, the potential is massive.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

You are struggling. In regard prices we're going on about  3, 4, 5 years into the future not now.

In the future? No one buys gaming consoles for media players except at the beginning of a generation. Five years from now Blu Ray players will be $50. Though I don't really know why I am responding after you said this:

"Only Sony consoles have continued to sell into the next generations, and thats because they've been future proofed to an extent. The same will happen with the ps3 with bluray being the biggest factor."

The alternative would be to do what nintendo did and release another standard definition console but the problem is that the ps2 already saturated that with 140 million sold.

Or release a system similar to the 360 with simple architecture and more brute force power. With the extra year the system could have been more reliable. Then Sony would likely have been in second place and with a chunk of Microsoft's marketshare would be closer to the Wii.

3 years ago the PS3 was the cheapest bluray player on the market. Now there are players at half the price, and we are going into a holiday season which likely means more price cuts on them. Possibly down to a third that of a PS3, or about $100. In 3, 4, or 5 years they weill be as cheap as $40-50 at Walmart. The PS3 will not be cheaper than that. I could do something witty, and slightly assanine like quote your line back at you here to highlight the role reversal in argument here, but I will take the high road.
