I don't want to derail the thread so the only reply I'll give yoy is that those numbers are quite pathetic. Compare these most "successful" titles to new IP on other platforms and see for yourself. And what's the most important is that these IPs you listed didn't drive the platform sales (with probably Infamous being exception of a small scale - not sure). So, you say Suny understands gamers require new IP and fresh experience? Well, OK... But Sony obviosuly fails to deliver such "refreshment" to gamers demands, as the sales indicates. And that's not OK, especially in conjunction with exec's quote  given.

Sony is more willing to take a risk on IP than Nintendo and Microsoft combined.

For every Gears that Microsoft creates Sony has at least 7 new IP's.

New IP's struggle against the sequels, but Sony's new games are selling enough to give them a sequel. Look at what Uncharted 2 is doing. 1.2 million in 2 weeks.

The thing that I love about Sony is they could have put everything into just making sequels to Gran Turismo, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Sly Cooper, etc, but instead they went with creating a strong line-up of new IP.

yup, I see quite a few people that seem to think that just because a NEW IP does not sale over a million in short time that it's pathetic or something. God that's like saying selling over 1 million of any number of published book's would be pathetic!

anytime you sell over a million copies of anything that's something not to just brush aside, so what if other system's sell more copies of their new IP's. the IDEA is to sell copies.

If you sale a million+ that's a great thing yea everyone would love to sell more copies of anything, no doubt but also being there is type's of software that sell better on one platform over another that's just the way it is.

LOL oh the irony of these forums. Sony, which I absolutely agree with here for a change, says that new IP is the lifeblood of the industry, and everyone agrees.

I say that IW is putting themselves in a bad situation for the future by ONLY making COD/MW games, and people lose their minds.

+1 to doublestandards

BTW, this is the smartest thing that Sony's said yet since the company existed.

Actually I counted for each this gen, and while my idea of a new IP might slightly differ than the next man, I counted 20 for Nintendo and 23 for Sony. It's fairly equal.

I can see what your saying, but on the same token it's not the same thing, due to the very fact you still need some of the old franchises to bolster New IP's, yes It's to me kinda tiresome to see the same IP's over and over again. for some that IS!

for Example:

RPG's I can see keeping the franchise alive until there is loss of new story IDEA's "if it seem's kinda stale" an that's subjective to the gamer.

but say for some FPS

I could see that remain depending on the objective's, its own story, the content added.

also subjective to the gamer!

what you have to ask yourself will there be enough sales over time to offset the need for a new IP to keep it fresh enough where other Game's are not taking away Game time from your Game.

a game like COD has such a following that I doubt it. when say for instance World of Warcraft has over 30 million player's world wide it's prob. a good idea to keep it going.

not to say they should not go and invest into other type's of game's

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a sequal to a huge franchise at launch though...

I would say Nintendo took more risk with its new ips. How many expected Wiifit to fail?

I think Sony's first and second parties have done an excellent job with creating new IP's, and it's a major reason why I support them more than any other console right now. I'm getting tired of the refuse that Nintendo and Microsoft keep spewing out, but the PS3 has repeatedly exposed me to brand new games.

Without the PS3, gaming would feel empty to me (outside of all the cheap, "micro" games that get released, like World of Goo, Braid, etc).

I'll admit that it'd be nice to get a fourth Crash game by Naughty Dog, or another Jet Moto, but at some point in time I know I'd get bored with it.

Nintendo and Microsoft do their fair share of new IPs also. You do know that right?

Nintendo: Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Nintendogs, Brain Age, Professor Layton, Hotel Dusk, etc.

Microsoft: Gears of War, Infinite Undiscovery, Crackdown, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, etc.

professor layton it level 5, gears = epic (third party, microsoft publish i think but gears 3 have rumours it's going multi), mass effect (bioware third party), lost odyssey= mist walker (third party).

infinity undiscovery (third party, but i read microsoft own the ip).

as for nintendo. at much those games sold, they are not high quality, big budget games as sony have published recently.
