PS3 hasn't been supply constrained since 2006, I doubt the PS3 wil have miraculous sales this holiday, NO AAA titles (Ratchet and Clank don't count)

what\'s amazing in those numbers.. is that XB is still growing up relatively fast for a console that has so many hardware problem... imagine one second if it didn\'t have the RRoD..... that said if the PB is fixed and official by Christmas that can boost the sales even more and announce an even better year 2008 ..... PS3 is definitely at its final test line... you can argue as much as you want the 2008/9 line up/system seller etc... if PS3 doesn\'t take off some how this holiday.... you can mark my word it will never come in second position this gen...
@munkeh and darthdevidem
now about PS3 outselling XB in europe this year that\'s totally wrong.... I just did some quick maths... if you take just europe minus australia and other non europe.... PS3 sold 508,478 console on it\'s launch week.... XB had 2,549,643 at this point....
with last week numbers we have and same method (minus australia and other non europe).. we have 1,501,255 for PS3 and 3,564,444 for XB if we substract both we have 992,777 for PS3 and 1,014,801 for XB
so beside launching week PS3 is far from outselling XB in europe this year... to be exact XB sold on average 734 units more than PS3 every week beside it's launch week... which is more than 2% more console than the weekly average of PS3 sales since after launch week

I am guessing 4.8 million. I think the gaming market is growing and this will be the biggest year of transition for the PS2 owners. With Halo 3 it will be the biggest holiday ever for MS. So given the elongated bump from H3 I am guessing a 50% increase is not a problem. Sorry PS3 but this one will be at your expense.
Meanwhile the Wii will do it's own thing. As the OP suggested different market. But hell that doesn't even matter, they are both chewing on the 120 million user PS2 carcus.
Final* Word on Game Delays:
The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.
Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.
Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.
*naznatips is exempt
dschumm - I agree - a 4.8m Nov-Dec is definately possible. It'd be amazing if it did.
Just think: we could see 10 million video game systems sell in just 2 months! That will be great if it happens.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
Microsoft has four key factors in their favor for the upcoming quarter. They have the better lineup they did not get the perfect storm they were anticipating having lost Grand Theft Auto for this year. However that was offset by the loss of Smash for Nintendo, and the insane amount of delays on the PS3. So the situation hasn't changed in comparison to Nintendo while Sony has lost a lot of ground. However Grand Theft Auto MIA for this holiday season did some damage to both high end consoles.
Price Microsoft has made some serious headway on this front. While we have focused so much attention on the price cutting Sony has done. I think Microsoft has made it to the edge of the mass market. Their low end model is just thirty dollars more then the Wii in North America, and its actually on even footing in other regions. Further more Microsoft has managed to get some bundles out to consumers. That helps to make the price a little less imposing. Anyway price cuts have been effective this year for Microsoft, and to a lesser extent Sony. However a cheaper machine should sell better year over year.
Library cannot be ignored the more you have the better. Old titles do sell consoles to an extent. The more you like on a platform the more appealing it will be. Microsoft has added quite a few decent titles this year some of them being block busters. The likes of Halo, Bioshock, and others will still be fresh enough to sell the console to consumers. The head start has some benefits, and this would be one of them.
The fourth factor is positive buzz. That is obviously the hardest to gauge however titles like Halo 3 bring with them a lot of avarice. The buzz is selling systems now, and will continue to sell systems in the near future. Image does matter then more attractive something is generally the better it sells. Further more the media coverage actually detracts from the PS3, while raining down positive stories about the 360. For almost a year now non stop negative PS3 press has to have taken a toll. Meanwhile the 360 has received a lot of positive press as of late.
There is nothing necessarily detracting from the 360 in the upcoming quarter, and they came through the year better then the other high end rival. Basically Microsoft is in a far stronger position this year rather then last year. They do not have to contend with launches steeling steam from their console. They also have done a lot to make it more appealing. So why shouldn't it sell much better.
I would say five million in the upcoming quarter is plausible. Thats just under two million for all the combined improvements. With the added advantage of their position over the PS3. Perhaps not the Wii, but another poster said it the market seems to be diversifying. Anyway my thoughts.
yeah just abt... maybe a lil under, 2.8 million maybe... not sure tho

PS3 is going to steal sales. A $399.99 ps3 + Descent line up of exclusives and actual stock may be enough to even sell more than 3.2 million (for the ps3). I expect about 3 million tops through the holidays for the 360.
2008 end of year predictions:
PS3: 22M
360: 25M
wii: 40M
They'll sell at least 3 million, if not more. No major problems + no real competition = cha-ching!
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

I dont know, none of my friends are planning on buying the ps3, its always the 360 they want, really, 400 dollars is still way to high, and heck even the 350 for the 360 premium is to high, but if it has software to push it, its a easy purchase for many, i know alot of people who want 360 over ps3, cause the games are just there.
I expect anywhere from 3-5 million this year for 360
2-4 for ps3, so its possible it will outself it
With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.
Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.
