Brink boss – PC-only sales cannot “justify” triple-A budgets

Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood has said that PC-only projects simply cannot attract enough money from publishers to create triple-A results.

“About two or three years ago we realised that we really wouldn’t survive if we only made PC games, since purely making PC games was incompatible with our goal of making triple-A games,” said the developer, demoing current project Brink yesterday at the EG Expo in Leeds.

“You just can’t get the publisher budget to ever [use] an orchestra in London, and then go and record at Abbey Road and get the best voice actors if you’re only going to release on the PC, where there isn’t the sales to justify that kind of work.”

Wedgwood added: “Because we needed to make that transition, I started playing console games,” and that he now plays “a lot more time playing console stuff” than PC games.

Wedgwood’s background is from the PC mod scene. He told the Expo audience that he originally resisted console gaming because he considered himself to be “hardcore PC guy,” but “loved it” and got “more and more into it”.

For the record, Brink looks properly, properly awesome. Hopefully we’ll be able to show it to you soon. It’s out for PC, 360 and PS3 next spring.

Okay, and how many "AAA" titles stay exclusive on either PS3 or 360 that are both not published by m$ or Sony?

MGS4 is perhaps the only example I can I think of.

Valkyria Chronicles. Yakuza 3.

Really?  What's your definition of Triple A game.

If Valkyria Chronicles cost what a game he's talking about costs... it must of lost a lot of money.  Same for Yakuza 3 actually.

I'd guess CoD4 PC sold more the 500K.

Additionally, I don't see how this is going to stop piracy at all.  If anything they'll just have pirates using THEIR matchmaker servers costing THEM money rather then it being some third party clan that pays money for a server.

errr pirated versions will soon enough appear with dedicated server support... that'll be fun...

(only reason I keep my PC preorder is because it's at £25... and I don't want to pay £45 for an xbox version...)

VC is AA I believe, not AAA. Yakuza 3, too early to tell.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

A Awesome game.

I haven't played the full valkyria though and my last yakuza was yakuza 2. So I can't comment fully on them.

If Tekken 6 was still exclusive I would also put it in this category... Cause it's awesome.

Check out my game about moles ^

You do realize he meant that you have to go multiplatform on all 3 systems to make Triple A games right... and that had nothing to do with the PC but how you need to go multiplatform to mitigate costs... right?

Yes, I did.  That was why I posted this.

"Exactly.  Except for PC it causes consternation because the game design expectations are different between platforms, whereas 360/PS3 games are the same."

That isn't the context it was used here.  So, such a comment is pointless.

You really think the differences cost more then what it costs to change up programming for the PS3 version?

I'd doubt it.  Espiecally considering that MW2 is as far as I know, using the same engine as MW1.

If anything it probably cost them money to make it like the console versions... since they would have to rewrite a lot of specific PC code.

My previous statements were not relegated to only MW2.  They were mostly pointed towards vlad's complaining that pc games are becoming consolified.  And my previous posts point out why that is, quite clearly.

And specifically related to IW.net, it was probably designed for future titles as well, so the investment is there for future PC/console developments.

Ah, but you miss the point.

360 to PS3 development costs 10 to 15% of the total game.

Do you think PC Specific features even cost 3% the price of the total game considering how seamlessly it ports to 360?

They verywell may lose more money in sales then they do costs.

They won't go bankrupt... but it will hurt there bottom line.

Afterall PC gaming has to be very profitable if companies bothered with it for so long, no?

And you miss my point.  Consoles have a controller.  PC has mouse and keyboard.  PC gamers complain about the consolification of games due to them not utilizing the full aspects of the mouse/keyboard combo.  This is why.  Regardless of what you think, in order to make a game successful on the console, different game design paradigms must be used.  Especially with FPS games.
