Brink boss – PC-only sales cannot “justify” triple-A budgets

Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood has said that PC-only projects simply cannot attract enough money from publishers to create triple-A results.

“About two or three years ago we realised that we really wouldn’t survive if we only made PC games, since purely making PC games was incompatible with our goal of making triple-A games,” said the developer, demoing current project Brink yesterday at the EG Expo in Leeds.

“You just can’t get the publisher budget to ever [use] an orchestra in London, and then go and record at Abbey Road and get the best voice actors if you’re only going to release on the PC, where there isn’t the sales to justify that kind of work.”

Wedgwood added: “Because we needed to make that transition, I started playing console games,” and that he now plays “a lot more time playing console stuff” than PC games.

Wedgwood’s background is from the PC mod scene. He told the Expo audience that he originally resisted console gaming because he considered himself to be “hardcore PC guy,” but “loved it” and got “more and more into it”.

For the record, Brink looks properly, properly awesome. Hopefully we’ll be able to show it to you soon. It’s out for PC, 360 and PS3 next spring.

Okay, and how many "AAA" titles stay exclusive on either PS3 or 360 that are both not published by m$ or Sony?

MGS4 is perhaps the only example I can I think of.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

CoD has already established itself as a well-known series backed up by what many still view as a quality dev team.

They're to the point where they could put the words "Call of Duty" on any game knowing people will buy it, even if it's lacking.

Exactly.  Except for PC it causes consternation because the game design expectations are different between platforms, whereas 360/PS3 games are the same.

Not sure I would agree 100 per cent. The PS3 does have more of an expectation of Dedicated servers than the 360. That aside your point is still valid as they have more in common than the PC requirements.

Valkyria Chronicles. Yakuza 3.

Check out my game about moles ^

Valkyria Chronicles has had huge funding from Sony.

But.. but.. Shio said that the PC version of 4 sold 8 - 10 million... why would they do this to the sequel of their best selling version... ;)

You do realize he meant that you have to go multiplatform on all 3 systems to make Triple A games right... and that had nothing to do with the PC but how you need to go multiplatform to mitigate costs... right?
