So you're trying to compare Katuragi to Iwata, seriously? If Iwata says that their next console will have HD and says that he won't price a console over $250, its not just bluster, he doesn't say things without a reason The Wii vitality sensor is still a ways off, they'll reveal the software at E3 2010, the Sony wand already has its launch software set, Wii fit and Wii sports are already out, so the Sony wand will have to compete with its launch software against those games.

Kutaragi didnt say things without a reason either. Are you flaming/trolling Ken? I sure hope not.

No it doesn't. It has part of its launch software set... With Gran Turismo 5 also rumored to be usable with it. I think so far there is one game confirmed... Resident Evil 5. Which is by no means a bad choice. Im surprised the WIi didn't get a RE5: Wii Edition actually.

Why do you think this is?

I don't need to troll Ken, he trolled himself, that's why he's no longer at Sony, lol Even if you include GT5, it still doesn't have the games to target the expanded audience, its games are targeting the core audience

I agree with you on that one actually. And GT5 doesn't go to just the core, it goes to both markets. Thats how the games manage to sell massive amounts.

Well we don't know if it will sell massive amounts, the only GT on PS3 sold about 3 million, it was on the PS2 that GT sold over 10 million, on a console with over 130 million units sold, so actually not a huge attach rate

GT5:Prologue has sold just under 4 million including downloads. For comparison, GT4:Prologue sold 1.36 Million.

GT4 ended up with over 10 Million sales.

Yeah, but there was already a GT on the system, so no real need to go out and buy the prologue to 4, on the PS3 there has yet to be a full fledged GT, not to mention, most PS3's are not fully BW compatible, so you can't just put an older GT into the console. So why was demand for the prologue only around 4 million?

so which demo sold over 4 millions units on any other console ?

heck which demo even sold 1 unit ?

None, they are all free or people woudn't get them..

And here you have a glorified demo that sells 4 millions units and you still find ways to argue with it...

Who's arguing, he pointed out that it sold more than the last demo, and I pointed out how the last console that a demo was sold on, had a full game in the series already on it, this console does not

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Here is the current sales in japan for 2009 for Wii and PS3 VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Jan 2009 to 24th Oct 2009: Console Wii PS3 Japan 1,012,924 1,006,810 So in order to beat the Wii, PS3 will probably have to sell at least 750K over ten weeks

And it'll sell 500k quicker than you can blink once FF XIII hits. Slim launch and this will be comparable. And whats going to boost Wii so much? NSMB?

NSMB Wii + Taiko Wii 2, Tales of Graces, Sengoku Musou 3,  PokePark, Mario & Sonic 2 and Crystal Bearers. This is a strong line up if you ask me.

Fixed.  Famitsu gave the Crystal Bearers a 30/40.  Not going to boost systems sales.

^ yeah but its also the only GT on the system, so if there are really 10 million people plus waiting for the full fledged version as you infer, why didn't they buy the prologue to tide them over?

He already answered this question...

"Because it is only the Prologue?"

Not many people are willing to shell out $40 for a "demo."

Twist it how you will. I like to visit imaginationland on occasion, but this is too much for me.

Ah, but that is the point I am making, is the demand for GT as high as carl expects, or is it because the PS2 was owned by so many people

I just call it Wii damage control. Whether or not the PS3 wins Japan (even though it will), the Wii still loses.

I'm just waiting for the excuses to be used to justify why the Wii struggled in 2009.

Waiting for the excuses? There's more than enough of them in this thread

We already know why the Wii struggled in 2009, even Iwata admitted why, so why does anyone need to give an excuse? The facts are already out there. The point of this topic was whether PS3 can outsell the Wii in 2009, in Japan, not why Wii struggled.

2009 is actually probably one  of the best year for 3rd party releases in Japan on the Wii....

Monster Hunter Tri, Monster Hunter G, the new Samurai warrior game soon, Tales of Grace..

Aside from DQX, third party ain't gonna get much better than that..

And that list is actually much better than 2007 or 2008...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Pretty sure this is a thread about Japan.

Besides that argument doesn't hold a candle.

2008 was by far the strongest year for Nintendo first party releases in Japan right

Well 2008 Wii sales in Japan were down 20% compared to 2007....( 2.9 mill compared to 3.6 millions).

Sales are just dropping even faster in 2009 which is kinda expected, product sales tend to start to fall slowly and then the fall accelerates..

Even if the console numbers come out in the Wii's favor, I think PS3 will definitely make more money in Japan this year than Wii because it selling so close to Wii as it is and it costs significantly more than the Wii console.

you are talking about revenue, not profit, right?

I would say profit because PS3 outsold Wii in Japan pretty handily at its old price for three months in a row at its old price earlier this year.  And, I doubt if Sony is losing more money to make PS3s in Japan, than the current price difference between Wii and PS3.

The difference still stands at 5M units (Wii over PS3).

And Japan has shrunk to less than 15 percent of the console market.

Even if it ends up as a Sony victory, its overall meaning is limited.

(And if Japan foreshadows the market -- better go get handhelds).

See anything up there??

GT5P sold around 4 mln. with PSN.

Every main GT game sells 10 mln.+ copies. This means, that there are 6 mln.+ people, which are yet to buy main GT game.

None of the titles I listed are going to spike sales (except Mario), that wasn't the point.  The point was they added to the lineup overall, and showed possibly the first time that Wii could expect a full and varied lineup that would help push overall sales, something that's usually been reserved only for machines like PS2 or DS.

By the same token, 2009 was far and away the best year for PS3 3rd party wise as well.  RE5, SF4, Yakuza 3, Tekken 6, Tales of Vesperia, Musou Orochi Z, PES 2010, Gundam UC0081, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Bayonetta, FFXIII, etc, etc.  Plus a huge pricedrop and complete platform remodeling (from the shell to the brand to the font even), resulting is what's essentially a platform relaunch.  And with all that, it might even not beat out Wii's weakest year yet, the year where even Nintendo's president is talking publicly about how they failed in the region.  Not quite as impressive when put in context.

I'd also argue, 3rd party wise, it only looks downhill for PS3 from FFXIII.  At least Wii still has the promise of DQX, PS3's blew it's load in 2009, and it's not gonna get any better than that...

GT5P was bundled mercilessly and was the first Prologue to even get worldwide release.

GT5 isn't hitting 10m.  In fact, I doubt any PS3 ever game hits that benchmark (only a handful of PS1/PS2 titles did), due to a weakened userbase and most big titles being on 360 as well.
