Forums - Sony - PlayTV Australian release - 26th Nov 09

The PlayTV system lets PlayStation 3 users record TV on their console, turning it into a personal video recorder similar to TiVo or Foxtel IQ.

The system consists of a small black box with twin HD TV tuners and a custom electronic program guide for the PS3.

Play TV can pause and rewind live TV as well as record one channel while the user watches another, plays a game, or watches a DVD.

It also lets users access their recorded shows wirelessly using a PlayStation Portable or a Sony Ericsson Aino phone.

The PlayTV will be sold for $169.95 from November 26th

Hopefully they'll make a new playtv so it will work with uk hd transmissions, then i will buy it

I really want this, but i dont want my ps3 to be on all the time... and it'll be hard to get my family used to turning on the ps3 to watch tv.

I've got Play TV for a long time now. Dont watch TV often but thanks to this little gadget can record my fav programs and watch them at wknd when have more time.

Awesome - one of the main reasons I got a 320gb upgrade for my PS3.

How?  Not sure that is even possible.

Only HD are Sky, Virgin and Freesat.

All of which already come with a box and recorder, what would be the point?

Freeview HD starting this december in London then rolling out to other places in the UK in 2010. Lots of places will have Freeview HD in time for World Cup.

freeview.... so pick up a PVR for about £40...

really dont get PlayTV

none of todays freeview boxes can receive Freeview HD as it will be using DVB-T2 which needs a hardware update.

@kowenicki

One of the big features of Play TV is the online fully supported episode guide. TIVO is one of the only PVR's in Australia that has this support. Not sure about the UK.

For me, the online EP Guide is one of the big attractions.

PlayTV is a really nice addition to the PS3, been using it since it launched here in the UK. The recording of series could be a little nicer/smarter, but the general quality and speed of the system more than makes up for it. As long as you are happy with the freeview range of channels I think its probably the best PVR/DVB-tuner available.
