They may share similar core mechanics, but Gears is more innovative. Uncharted took almost all of its major parts from other games and perfected it.

I disagree strongly. I can't think of any games besides maybe Assassin's Creed that do climbing, jumping, etc. as well as Uncharted. Gears of War is great but what do you find so original about it? I'm actually asking. I think you've got it backwards. I would say Uncharted is more innovative and Gears "perfected" its style of gameplay.

What is there to disagree with? I gave examples such as Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider and Killswitch. All of these games came before Uncharted and. The only thing you've got on Gears is Killswitch. Uncharted by no stretch of the imagination is innovative. It just took from other great games and made its own name. Because of Uncharted I may never look at Tomb Raider again, because it is the total package of the games which I forementioned. Gears took from killswitch and innovated and pushing the third person shooters with aggessive warlike atmosphere that makes you feel like you're in a war complete with action, bayonette slicing, Quick reload/ Jamming. Gears is so innovative that Tecmo was compelled to make a game that looks exactly like it in the form of Quantum Theory for the PS3. That game...well..looks like a joke, but still a compliment is a compliment.

The only thing that I find Gears of War truly innovated was the quick reload mini game thing (Something similar may even be in another game that I just haven't found). Uncharted innovated several smaller thing that I hadn't seen in other games, like character models reacting to water (getting wet), plants/foliage reacting to character movement, being able to do third person aiming over the right or left shoulder (actually, I'm pretty sure other games have done this, but for some reason Uncharted is the first time I can remember seeing it). While not effecting gameplay directly I think these helped imerse the player into the game world.

I hate how tons of people call down Uncharted for being uninnovative.. probably 9.9/10 games bring nothing new to the table, so why pick on Uncharted when it did, and carried an awesome experience with it.

The game was a borderline movie with parts from other games. I loved Uncharted, because it perfected what wasn't done so well in the past. It reminds me of the Pitfall concept from when I was a child. Actually it almost mirrors it. Gears innovated more than the reloading mini game. Not only did it perfect what Killswitch did, but it did it in its own way.9.9's don't matter. It was a great game and I  loved it. Gametrailers were correct when they stated that the game wasn't innovative either on 'Invisible Walls'. Never have I played a game where you felt like a war was coming at you from almost all sides. Nor have I ever seen such blood thirsty AI on the hardest levels. Need I bring the innovative weapons in this? Theres the sticky/spiked smoke and frag grenades that explode when someone from the opposing side runs by it; they've got bayonette rifles, Torque Bow with explosive arrows, the running controls depicting a struggle and breath is brand spanking new to the genre. Never have I played a third person shooter with slicing bayonette grapples. Gears 2 continued to impress, but this is about part one. I don't even want to go into part two because this argument will be over real soon. As I said, they both cannot be compared. They are both great in their own way. One game took the innovative route and the other game took the safe route.

I don't see the difference here.. You say that Uncharted only took other things and perfected them, and thats not innovative, then you say that Gears of War perfected what killswitch did, and that IS innovative? And weapons? those have been in games before, so already the guns aren't innovative, they're just an improvement, or "perfection" from what there was before. Smoke grenades have been around, frag grenades that explode when someone from the enemy team runs by it are called proximity mines/grenades in other games, tons of games have guns with blades on them, weapons with projectiles that explode on impact have been around and out button mashing an enemy to kill them has been done before, ect ect.

In many statements before i said both games took from Killswitch and perfected it. Gears of War gave a new style and feeling to the genre though. Uncharted never did that. The major greatness of uncharted are environments and gameplay mechanics which were taken from games like Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider andn Killswitch. Gears created an extreme multiplayer andn single player experience out of an already established genre. It put a third person shooter on par with the likes of Halo even if it was for a moment in time. Uncharted and Gears are both milestones in the third person shooter genre, but Gears innovated and influenced other games.

What I'm trying to get at here is that the subject of innovation is very subjective. You can say every game this gen is a copy of things that came before, or you can say that every game is innovative because they added one small little change somewhere.

The definition of innovation is to bring something new or different to the table in a genre where such things don't exist. Gears does that and Uncharted doesn't. Even Gears one turned heads because it offered a third person war-time that not even Killswitch couldn't even touch. Second of all innovation isn't subjective. Gears innovations in the third person shooting realm are quite concrete. Third person shooters were only that cool on the PS2 with Socom and on PC with C&C: Renegade.

The problem I have is that of all the tons of games that are nothing new, people pick(ed) on Uncharted a lot for some reason. Is it because it's too highly rated and they need something to nitpick? I know the games not perfect, but it is a far cry from being bland and copied from elsewhere.

Uncharted is highly rated. There is no doubt about it and it deserves it. To call the game out on its lack of innovation is not nit picking. Talking about bugs, graphics and HD bullshit is  nitpicking. Gears has had a positive effect on the industry. I have a PS3 and 360 and the  major difference I see between the two systems games are PS3 titles feel like thrill ride blockbusters with gameplay and 360 games feel like games.

And before people flame, I do think Gears was innovative (and awesome), but I also think Uncharted was.

Name the ways. As I said before, I am calling you out on this.

I think this is a rather tough comparison. Uncharted 1 was not overly special in my opinion, and while it can be stated that it has done nothing that hasn't been done before, what it did do was put a number of things from different styles of games into one game. So that is something new. Uncharted 2 then simply improved on this formula.

Gears on the other hand did a number of new things. It has the over the shoulder cam, bringing the player much closer to the action. And it's cover system was something that had never been done before in a game, or if it had then Gears brought it to the masses by doing it extremely well.

Both are amazing games, but i personally wouldnt rate one against the other as i think they are both different enough that they are not really in competition with each other.

This comment was almost perfect. One gripe though, because Gears took the cover system from Killswitch. The majority of whats left else was majorly innovation coming from a godly FPS company like EPIC.

Strange "Rounds", and im not even sure what they are competing in? U2 won "hands down" in having better graphics and a bad ass main character, while being outsold by Gears. And i dont see how 2-1 can be "Hands down" :D

Stupid comparison

Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

I hate these threads. Its really a PS3 vs 360 thread in disguise.

Uncharted is easily better.

Gears isn't even good IMO. That game gets by on graphics alone. Gameplay is a lost art when it come to the Gears of War series.

Its funny you should say that.............. Don't most ps3 fans say that Uncharted 2 is the best looking game available on HD consoles?

Try again.

I wonder why they compared these two games.

I easily prefer Gears over Uncharted. I wouldn't tell someone they are wrong if they prefer Uncharted over Gears; opinions differ, no big deal.

Average Review scores = Uncharted 2(97)>Gears(94)>Gears 2(93)>Uncharted(88)
Lifetime Sales = Gears 2>Gears>Uncharted 2>Uncharted

Gears of War and Gears of War 2 were both better than Uncharted. Because they had better campaigns and they had good online. Uncharted had no online mode. Uncharted had better visuals than Gears of War due to releasing a year after Gears of War. But Gears of War 2 had better visuals upon Uncharted, due to being released a year after Uncharted.

Uncharted 2 is a huge improvement upon Uncharted in terms of gameplay, better campaign, excellent visuals and now has online.

I am looking forward to Gears of War 3 to see how it will improve upon Uncharted 2 in terms of gameplay and graphics. Gears of War 3 may or may not be released on XBox 360. It could be a launch title for the next XBox system. Uncharted 3 may actually release before Gears of War 3.

Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to place Uncharted 1 and 2 against Tomb Raider Legend and Underworld?
