Forums - Gaming - Just purchased a Sega Genesis - any games to look for?

I just ebayed a Genesis, and to be honest I am kinda stoked. It has been a while since I have made a retro gaming purchase. I never had one as a kid and was always curious about the console. Also, my Wii is in the shop so I could use a distraction while I wait.

The auction came with 11 games:

Sonic The Hedgehog 2~, Ms. Pac Man,  Mortal Kombat II, Marvel Comics: Maximum Carnage~

~Desert Strike~ (Qty: 2), Golden Axe~ (no case), The Lion King, Taz In Escape From Mars~

~Tiny Toon Adventures: Busters Hidden Treasure, Goofy's Historical History Tour~

I am watching a few videogame lots for Genesis games, but are there any singles I should look for specifically?

And for some reason pasting from the ebay listing changed my font color.

goto audio test of tiny toons. back in the day mean machines sega mag coulsnt belive it was a megadrive thats pumping out audio quality like that its astonishing.

Streets of Rage 2 (the others are also good, but 2 is the best)
Landstalker
Sonic 1 + 3 (you've only got 2, if I understood that right)
Shinobi III
Toejam & Earl should be good too (but honestly, I've never played it)

Question: Do you or did you have a SNES???

Because there's a lot of multiplatforms and SNES usually won in that area (except games like Mortal Kombat, that sucked on the SNES)...

For exclusives:

-All the Sonic games, if you have Sonic 2 for me that's the best, but Sonic 1, 3, Knuckles, etc. are great too...
-Phantasy Star is a great RPG series, the IVth is epic...
-If you like Sports games, Genesis has Joe Montana, Pat Riley, Tommy Lasorda, etc.
-Alex Kidd
-Golden Axe
-Altered Beast
-Ghouls N' Ghosts

etc.

Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi, this game is one of my all-time favorites.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

thank you for saying shining force 1 and 2.  I was about to blow a cap at this thread for the lack of recommending 2 of the best games ever made.

Do you still have a PS3? (I see only one game in your profile) If so, grab Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for it. For $30 US, you get 40+ Sega Genesis games (plus some Master System and some Arcade version Sega games too). That'll save you a lot of money since you won't have to pay the cartridges for those 40+ games (though I see you already have carts for some of them). Unless you are a collector who really wants to own the cartridges, the Ultimate Genesis Collection is the cheapest way for you to get a whole bunch of Sega games legally (collection includes lots of quality games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic%27s_Ultimate_Genesis_Collection ). Check the list out. I think PSN might have some Genesis ports with online multiplayer so that's worth checking out as well.

Here are some great Genesis games you don't already have that I enjoyed...
- NBA Jam Tournament Edition (unless you already have it for SNES. I think TE is the best version but I could be wrong. If there's a new NBA Jam that is better than the Genesis/SNES ones, let me know. I loved that game.)
- Road Rash series (I personally enjoyed Road Rash II a lot. This is awesome. I wish this series was revived. There is a Road Rash III on Genesis but I never played it.)
- Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (included in that Ultimate collection)

I mainly played sports games back in the Genesis days (along with some Sonic, Golden Axe, etc.) but I don't know if you'd appreciate most of them because the rosters are outdated. Even in NBA Jam obviously but NBA Jam is a really cool game so I recommended that anyway. I could recommend something like the NHL series (NHLPA 93 had fighting and blood so that was awesome. Fighting returned in NHL 96. But NHL 94 and 95 were great too), Joe Montana NFL Football 94 or Sega's Sports Talk Baseball (I'm really dating myself aren't I? lol) but I'm sure you'd rather play NHL 10, Madden 10 and MLB 09: The Show (or The Bigs 2 if you prefer something more arcadey) instead if you like those sports. Though I know a lot of people who swear by old-school EA NHL and say that the new NHL games are too sim-like for their tastes. I think I might be in that camp. I tried the NHL 09 demo and didn't think it was as fun as NHL on the Genesis and Playstation 1. Or maybe it's just that I'm not a hockey nut like I used to be and I haven't seriously played a NHL game since NHL 2001.

Contra: Hard Corps

X-men and X-men 2 ...those were the first best X-men games to hit console and even SNES didnt get them
