Quality. That is a word I am seeing being thrown around this thread. My question is, who get's to decide quality?

Nice question. Usually "quality" is referring to metacritic score.

So, we let a few dozen elites decide what is quality rather than the masses? That doesn't seem right to me.

Indeed. and yes all goverments work that way also, democracy it's a lie.

No contest, Ps3, won this year, imo, and if we go by Gamerankings, it also supports my point.

This isn't possible. You're wrong.

Then who had the best year. Nintendo because they sold the most. I don't care about that.

You're allowed to have an opinion. It's just that what you said is plain wrong. Go to Gamerankings and find me these games you're talking about. I've never even heard of them.

I'm too lazy, if you wanna prove me wrong that much go ahead, i'm take a nap meanwhile. Also I said it supports, not decides.

That's becasue you know PS3 hasn't published any games. I could go to Gamerankings and not find a single game PS3 has published ever.

ps3. It only does everything :p

New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

it got a 7

Mario Kart Wii got a 6 and it outsold all games mentioned in the OP... combined. What this shows is that critics get overruled by gamers and in the end that's what really matters: pleasing gamers, not reviewers.

just because something sells doesn't necessarily mean its quality

Absolutely correct. However, the OP's method of a 90+ Metacritic isn't any better as an indicator to quality. This is taking the word of approximately 60 game players over the opinions of many more. Not to mention critical reviews in gaming are a joke compared to other fields like books, movies, and music. If there were more credibility in the review system, they may have some weight, however without it, I'd say sales are actually a better indication if we have nothing else to go on.

Couldn't disagree more. Just because something is popular or catches on, does not make it a good product. Internet Explorer has the highest marketshare despite being one of the worst if not the worst browser available.

You couldn't disagree more with what? My point was that neither reviews, nor sales are very good indicators to the quality of a game. I said sales might have a slight edge since critical reviews in gaming are an absolute joke and better to get the horrid opinions of the many as opposed to the horrid opinions of the few.

How does the Internet Explorer analogy fit? You do realize it's a pack-in, don't you? Most people don't download internet explorer. It's just there when they get their PC. A better thing to wonder is which optional browser has the most marketshare, and see if that in fact is of high quality. I'd like to think that's Firefox, and if it is, that's some good taste there. Love me some Firefox.

Well, you said that sales are a better indication of quality because of the video game review system. I agree that the review system is terrible, but I disagree that sales are a better indication.

all of these are reviewd  above 9 in IGN and have very good metacritic scores.

Review scores are not a solid measure of the quality of a game or the quality of a companies performance.  If that was the case, Nintendo would have been bankrupt with the N64 and Sony would have more money than all other gaming companies combined.  As it so turned out, the opposite is true.

And as it so turned out, Nintendo is the company winning all the major awards this year as well.

Ken, how many major awards have been given out this year?  Seems odd to do before games like Modern Warfare 2 and NSMB can even hit.

I would be very surprised if Nintendo can win "all the major awards" in a year when their own president admits they messed up and "let the mood cool."

They've already won multiple awards this year (one for being the 'most innovative' company as well as a number of smaller awards).  But yes, they won't win all the awards.  I was just speaking in generalization that Nintendo is the one who seems to be winning all the awards.  It seems rather stupid that suddenly when Sony turns around and starts selling more units for a couple months and sells 'less' of a deficit, they should be awarded 'Publisher of the Year'.

Last time I checked, there's more to being a good publisher than just having popular games.  They also need to make a profit and hold that title for a sustained amount of time.  Something Nintendo has done for oh...3-4 years now consistently.  And Sony has dropped the ball on badly and needs to work a while on to gain that title back.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

lulz, sales. Yep, Nintendo is the best publisher of the year.

And I suppose Transformers 2 is the best movie of the year? And Boom Boom Pow is the best song of the year? And whichever Twilight book came out this year is the best book of the year?

Right?

Sony has done a great job this year and last year with their exclusive games. I am not going to call them the best since I really haven't played the other console's game, but Sony have produced the best reviewed games lately.

The crazy thing is Sony has given us so many new ips this Gen that are amazing qualities. And the game that will separate it from the others I believe :

The Last Guardian.
i have a funny feeling that game will cement it self as this Generation's best.

I don't think it will, and this is coming from someone that has both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus in his top 10 games ever. If those two titles couldn't become the best, then I don't think The Last Guardian can. The games are just a bit too left oc center to gather everyone together in unision. The accolades will always go to something that is great, but very acceptable to all.

On a personal level, I have my hopes that The Last Guardian could be the greatest game ever. Anything from that studio definitely has the potential to.

You do realize that the USA is not a democracy right? It's a Republic. Anyway, governments do not decide what is quality, they decide what is best for the good of the people. And, to add to that, Metacritic is not a government....so there is so much wrong with your statement it's comical. Anyway, Quality is not something that can easily be measured and will vary from person to person.
