Forums - PC - New PC, need help

So, I have a new PC now. It's nice and all, doesn't freeze up on me for no reason. But I always have trouble with computers. They all hate me. When i got it back it just started messing up on me. Then i took it back to get help and it worked fine for them. So far the Tower itself works fine and the processes on it but my External Harddrives seem to not like me new computer.

I have three external hdd, they work only so much. I am able to access files off them, I'm able to download directly to them, but i can not move files between them. I can move files between one of my external hdd to my internal hdd but not the others. Also i can sometimes, if lucky, get one file moved over to the other hdd before it messes up. What it does is say there are no files on my external hdd's. So everytime i have to restart my computer to get them to show up again. It never shows an error or anything. The green bar that shows the process of moving the file just stops and i have to stop it.

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem?

I have Windows 7, so i don't know if it's just not that compatible, but the external hdd's are WD. And on their site they say the are "ready for Windows 7" but they don't act like it.

Thanks for any help.

Try the externals on another computer, maybe it's not something to do with the computer itself? idk

Try another OS (on a LiveCD) to see if software or hardware is at fault (if they work with the other OS on the same hardware then it's a software fault).

Thanks for the replies. But they work with XP fine. Also i didn't mention that this also affects my USB thumbdrives. I put one in and moved files from it to my external and it messed up. Though if i move it onto my internal Hdd it works fine. So i really don't know what's wrong.

Well, I can tell you that it probably isn't something with drivers or Win7, I'd imagine - it's just USB storage devices we're talking about, not like it's some exotic device that hasn't had driver support for a decade or something.

Do other USB devices function properly? Maybe try using different ports?

I basically use all the USB ports on my Tower. Two in front and 4 in back. I use 3 in back for my external and that last one available for my printer. The front ones i use for my thumbdrives.

How are your external HDD formatted? I haven't used Windows 7 so I'm not sure if that'd be an issue or if MS have introduced any new formating system but I thought it might be worth checking to see if that could be an issue.

They are all FAT32 if that's what you mean. I never changed them to the other. If i did that it would get rid of my files. But they all worked before. Also my Defragmenting they don't show up. Well just now only one is showing up for the first time.

If your files are relatively large then that may be a problem then. I know MS like to push standards on people so it could be that FAT32 won't do it anymore (although it probably could technically). Maybe try formatting a seperate USB stick in NTFS and try moving files to and from that drive.

How big are the files you're moving? FAT32 won't allow files larger than 4 GB IIRC. Though it would specifically tell you if that were the case that the files are too big for the filesystem the drive is using.
