Im not sure if increasing the userbase was the right term, more like a impulse buyer. And its natural, its always like this when a company pricecut their product whether you will need it or not afterwards. So we're not sure if the ones buying the Wii and PS3 because of the pricecut are really using the product.

But overall, seem the pricecut mania had fizzled. theres no hype or news on it afterwards. After 2 weeks its always like other every week when console sales were concerned. And we will know it in October NPD. If either of the 2 consoles didnt double or triple the sales after the pricecut the pricecut isnt worth it after all. Just remember, PS3 sells for about 490,000+ while the Wii sells 462,000.

PS3 was averaging 100k before the cut, it is averaging little over 200k now, how can you even make such an argument ????????

I did say that, but again... you only mentioned the PS3. We discussed both consoles here its even in my post you quoted

Wii sales before the cut : 220k or so.

Wii sales after the cut : 350k....

In both cases the number speak for themselves and are readily available on the site, I really don't see the point of arguing about them...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Is that WW or NA? because some PAL regions dont have a pricecut yet, instead they're bundled with WM+. And for the sake of arguement that the pricecut indeed boost the sales, how do we know that its the pricecut and not because of the holiday season months? Just remember in 2008 the Wii sold 800,000 in NA alone accroding to NPD.

Yeah and before the cut the Wii was on track to sell 250k in September in NA

Guess what, they cut the price and it sold almost double that...

If moving off the bottom of the weekly console sales charts and more than tripling sales from previous months isn't progressive (not helping) then I don't know what is.

Temporary???

Everything in life IS temporary.

If you mean the Wii did the Wii have more sales weekly last year compared to this year?

Is the Wii selling better than what it was before the price cut? Honestly Nintendo know what they're doing, the Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, NSMBWii and price cut are all going to work in tandem this holiday to push Wii sales higher than last holiday. It wasn't going to happen without the price cut because Nintendo screwed up this year and didn't have the hardware sellers available.

PS3 - It's obviously helped and sales are increasing every week. Sure it's temporary but it'll probably last 6 months or more before the PS3 really starts dropping again.

You must read my last post before this one, Nintendo Wii must outsell or even more their monthly sales last year for the pricecut to be worth it. if not, why even bother with losing potential profit with a 250 dollar console to slash the price at  200?

Because without the cut the Wii would have moved 250k units...

There's a difference between asking whether the cut helped move sales or whether to allowed to get back to previous year momentum.

If you use logic ( I know it's a thing in short supply on this site), to see if a cut helps you compared sales in the month leading to the cut to sales after the cut........

Spin. Even though I want to dissect your post its still much a spin to me. But then we will never knew till the holidays are over right? When theres no holiday shoppers around? In summer months?

But hey... lets leave it at that. Though Im still say the pricecut didnt help the Wii. I'll be disappointed if the Wii didnt passed the 800,000 mark or worse, in the next NPD PS3 and Wii sales could actually the same or equal or PS3 could outsell the Wii.

So we'll only be able to see the effects of the price cut in summer months? Lol, what a way to make sure no one remembers this thread by then.

Holiday sales don't start just yet. It's been said, even by the big honchos on this site, that those start in a week or two, three. So you're just trying to escape the inevitable answer that both price cuts worked, by dodging and spinning yourself. I guess the MS price cut might still be a success, depending on whether it sells good on 14th of may 2011. That's evidently the day that this price cut actually starts working..

And stop focussing on the NPD, unless you only want US sales. US =/= World (luckily)

OK then, if thats what you want then Im fine with that. Im already let this topic go and say few months later "I told you so" when that time comes. But since you insist I'll let you and others here and make a monthly comparison. I still win though, nothing can win the OCT-Dec. 2008 and Jan.-Mar. 2009 NPD

BTW 2009 was the start of recession and the Wii still selling that much till March

The continual price cuts by its competitors brought their units down to a point where there was perceived value on the part of many consumers in the $50 differential between the Wii and the PS3 and Xbox 360 models with hard drives.

By increasing that differential to $100 with the price drop, Nintendo positioned itself for the holiday season when it will have several new games of interest released and a substantially lower price point. (Wii + Wii Fit Plus = PS3 or Xbox 360; Wii + Wii Sports Resort + NSMBWii = PS3 or Xbox 360).

Sometimes you cannot see the result of an action because it is not seen -- instead what needs to be considered is what would the situation be without that action.

That was NOT your point. Your point was trying to state that both price cuts failed because of some reason no one is able to see. Yet, now you want to "prove" that they have failed because they couldn't beat the numbers from the year before (which was the top year for consoles like the Wii). That's just ludicrous. If Man Utd doesn't score more than 100 goals, they will have failed, even though they might still win the league? It doesn't work like that. Sales have increased tremendously for the PS3 right now, and that's the aim of the price cut. Because, with your "logic", the 360 is bound to be this year's biggest failure.
