Hypothetical situation:

What if someone else who wanted for the same purposes bought it instead of me? I'd rather have someone pay me for a service than somebody else.

Let's imagine the following situation (which fortunately is not a real story):

The other day I saw a woman walking on the street at night. Some guy was going to rape her. I kicked the guy's ass, and then I raped her myself. I'd rather be the one who rapes her than just letting some other guy do it.

Does this analogy in any way prove that you're wrong to do it? No, but it doesn't prove you're right either. So please don't use that argument as defense, because it doesn't really defend you.

Woah buddy, that one is a little to far. In my situation no one is getting hurt.

OK, how 'bout this hypothetical:

I saw some dude on the news selling SPAM cans to for $20 each to victims in some disaster area, so I went down there as fast as I could and sold SPAM cans for $18.

Congratulations, you're a slightly less abusive gouger.

Edit: Also, I'm not even trying to defend my character, as that is a matter of personal opinion anyway.

I'm just showing you that the arguments you're using to defend yourself make no sense, by using an extreme example. If you can't understand that kind of thing, just don't attempt to defend yourself, because you're obviously not capable of doing so.

Dude, what on Earth are you talking about? If only two parties are involed and no one gets hurt, he is not being a dick. He is a willing seller and he is looking for a willing buyer. If someone thinks that a Wii is worth $300 then they are both helping each other out. Someone will not buy from him unless they think as Wii is worth at least $300. It is called the free market and it is one of the most wonderful things in the world. You are the one that is acting like a dick by calling him names for trying to help people. Seriously, why are you down on people that help others? If anything, you should be thanking him for making the world a better place :) OK, maybe that was a bit much, but I hope you get my point.

So he's helping people get a Wii buy buying one and then selling it for more than it's worth? He is doing nothing to help anyone out other than himself (he even admitted it) so don't try to defend him and say that he has some altruistic motive.

You're creating a false dichotomy. It's possible to "help people" (indirectly) without having an "altruistic motive"...

In fact, it happens all the time and is essentially the basis of the free market economic system that has proven to be quite effective at getting goods into the hands of those who value them.

Heck, Nintendo has a completely selfish and non-altruistic motive for making the Wii and selling it for $250, yet they are helping millions of gamers by doing so.

The thing is though is that Nintendo is the one who decides the price since it's their hardware.  CDude isn't the one makign the hardware, he's just being a middleman and needlessly jacking up the price.

And yes, I actually agree that NJ5's example was in fact a bit too extreme.

Agree to disagree, twesterm?

I think twesterm's point is that in terms of "helping", he's helping someone and unhelping someone else at the same time (the person who would pick up the Wii from the store if cdude didn't). So those factors either cancel out, does cdude think that the person who has access to Ebay has more right to the Wii than the other person, who might not have more than $250 to spend?

Personally, I think that the person who was going to the store but has potentially less money, is the one who should get the console.

Do what some guy on ebay is doing and include with the system Wii Sports, Play, and that carnival game, add up all the mini games and say that you are including 30 games with the system. To someone not familiar with the Wii it will seem like a great deal to get a $250 system and 30 games for about $500

Hmmm...wonder who this could be.

Advertising that you're selling a Wii with 43 games because you're including MP8, Wii Play, Wii Sports, and Carnival Games is a completely different level of douchebaggery.

As long as you keep trying to make excuses that you're not a jerk or are making the world a better place, I'll keep saying you are in fact a jerk and you're only supporting the jerk behavior. Otherwise, I'll more than likely stay quiet.

The kind of thing cdude is defending here is basically the same thing that concert ticket scalpers do. Using a scarce resource as a way to make profit for themselves, while contributing nothing to society and preventing poorer people from getting that resource.

Grr! I never said I wasn't a jerk. Sheesh. All I said was that I respect the opinions of those of you that think I am.

How is helping people? You're letting one person get a Wii (overpriced). That is, in lieu of one customer who would have simply gone to the store, bought a Wii at retail, and went home happy. You're simply transferring the availability of the Wii to another person and jacking up the price.
