Forums - Sales - The difficulty of selling a Wii

I'm at work too, about to get off. I'll see your rebuttal when I get home, or maybe later as my commute is only one hour, and destroy your position with my FULLY FUNCTIONAL DEBATELSTATION.

I'm looking forward to it.

Careful doing that on craigslist. There have been more then one situation where someone got cockpunched for scalping a video game system on there and ended up -1 Wii/PS3/360 and minus purchase price of said system.

I don't wish ill on anyone, but I wouldn't feel bad for someone manipulating the system to have this happen.

You aren't doing a service to a person by buying the system and then selling it for more then your cost. You are a parasite when it all boils down to it. Sure, Person X may buy the system from you for $80 above the MSRP of the machine, but you took the opportunity away from person Y for buying it at $250 at the store if they do not have anymore left. Now if Person Y wants to get a Wii, they will either have to pay your higher fee for said Wii, or wait longer until they can find one at a store for the $250.

What if a person wants to buy a Wii for their kids for Xmas. And it would make them so happy if they got one. But poor mom is single and works 60 hours a week at 2 jobs just to make ends meet. Also poor mom has been saving up all year for the wii for her kids and can only justify spending the $250 plus tax for the console as money is tight. So now mom has a choice to make. Does she pay the douchebag selling a Wii on eBay or Craigslist an extra $80+ for the wii and have to cut back on groceries so her kids are happy and have the game system to play while their tummies are rumbling. Or does she buy them a Vii since that is all she can find in a store and the kids are disappointed and broken hearted for getting a cheap chinese knock off that has crappy games? Or does she decide to wait and on xmas morning the kids only have one present to open which is a picture of a Wii that you are holding in your eBay/craigslist ad and saying that she needs to save more money to buy it from a douchebag.

Sounds pretty parasitic to me. But if you can sleep at night knowing that because of people doing what you are doing won't have the opportunity to play with a Wii while you count your few bucks here and there.

There are better ways that you can make even larger amounts of money and I talked about it earlier in this thread, but it's something that takes skill, time, patience, and you aren't considered a douchebag because you found a great deal on something else that isn't taking away from anyone.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

I never though I'd agree with jjseth so much!

Poor single mom or not, if she wants one at retail then she can wait to find one at retail.

Dear Everyone,

The fact that capitalism is beneficial for some things doesn't mean that all instances of it are ethical or worthwhile. This isn't a debate of socialism vs. capitalism, it's a debate about a particular facet of capitalism. Stop grandstanding about the free market and consider the specific ethical properties of what I believe has been correctly identified as scalping.

Thanks!

Sadly, Capitalism is exactly what this is about. IF NOBODY VALUES A WII AT HIS ASKING POINT NOBODY WILL BUY IT! He will not take advantage of anybody that wants his Product. You may indeed call this scalping, that doesn't mean this is exactly what is happening. It is all about your perspective, world-view, paradigm, prism of reality, etc... of the market. I don't think he is taking advantage of anyone, so I cannot say that he is crossing any ethical line in the sand.

So you've never taken a Buisness Ethics class in college then.

That is the reply of a parasite.  He cares not about the poor single mother nor her children who will be crushed on Xmas morning because mom wasn't able to buy a Wii at the store because of douchebags who buy and sell for a profit.

You are taking away from the children and their hopes for having a wii to play first thing xmas morning.   If you weren't a parasite you would not take from them only to add to your profit.   I really hope nintendo saturates the market this Xmas and you and other parasites cannot sell one on eBay or craigslist for what you paid for the Wii and you are past the return period and cannot get your money back that way.

I'm a kinder and gentler jjseth these days. :)   See, even my Mr T doesn't look quite so menacing.

She works 60 fucking hours a week.

She would have no freaking time to get one at retail.

That wasn't a required course unless you majored in Econ.  :)

You don't know her schedule, maybe she works over night and can be at a store right at opening, or if the scalpers wouldn't buy all the Wii's they could they may not run out and she could get to the store at her leisure.

60 hours isn't that crazy of a schedule, especially since I did have one that I was literally made to work 80 hours a week because I had no help at work.  You can guess that I didn't take that very long before I quit, but I also don't have any mouths to feed except my own.   For all we know she could work 5 12 hour days and still have 2 days off a week that she could shop.
