Bows, cars, rocks, and a number of other devices will serve you well.

Bows are too cumbersome, don't fit in my nightstand. They also have a slow rate of fire and less precision, especially at greater distances. Also, they are not ideal for close quarter combat.

Do you REALLY believe I want to damage my car just to run someone over? Really? This isn't GTA you know. Stealing cars is too much work, and using my own is out of the question. And again, they are not fit for indoors combat.

Rocks don't really kill that well from a distance. You have to get up close and presonal for those. They are also a bit too heavy to carry around.

No, guns are the way to go. Easy to hide and carry, not very expensive, good at distances up to 20m or so (depending on your weapon of choice).

Good sized rock can knock someone down plenty easily. And bam there you are for a kill. Bows I will give you. And when killing your own son because of a $60 video game do you really care that much what happens to the car? The boy clearly needs to die.

Flamethrowers, Poisoning food, booby traps, vapourizing using alien technology ? Please.

Please what? I am doing my best to try and engage the other side of this argument. Give me a realistic explanation why the gun should be the focus of this tragedy. I have explained very well how a number of other devices could easily be used to achieve similar results.

well the issue is the combination of having both.  At least the kid would have a fighting chance if the dad didn't have a gun.  If the dad was extremely drunk it shouldn't be that hard to get away the dad probably can't even walk straight.  It takes a hell of a lot more guts to get a knife and stab someone than to use a gun also.  You can easily get drunk and start pointing a gun around, but you aren't gonna get drunk and forcefully stab someone without having some idea what you're doing.

There's no realistic way you can get rid of alcohol no matter how long we talk about it.  Getting rid of guns is realistic (although in the US' case it is quite difficult) and many countries do it.  Is there any country that has a ban on alcohol?  I don't know of one.  The US tried it once and it failed miserably.

if the game was Uncharted 2 i would have killed my son too

If I actually tried to kill someone with a rock from a distance greater than 3 meters, people would be more likely to laugh at me than run screaming. And if I would kill for a $60 videogame, imagine how obsessed I would be about my $20,000 car.

we're not talking about premeditated murder here.  We're talking about someone who got angry and grabs what is around him.  If it's a gun you're screwed, if he grabs a kitchen knife you got a chance.  If he went through all the planning to do the murder then yea he's gonna do what it takes to kill the kid, but this isn't that type of murder.  He's gonna use what is convenient to use at the time.  It was a murder of spur of the moment rage not premeditation.

I find the assertion that someone is willing to shoot at people while drunk, but not stab them to be absurd. This wasn't him firing off rounds at a bottle on the fence or something stupid like that. This was specific and targetted brutality. I'll grant you a fighting chance. The problem with that argument is it moves away from the murder being the issue, and towards not being a fair fight. That would mean you could "solve" the problem by giving the son a gun as well. That is not a good argument in my eyes.

I would also say if you are attacking your own child with a deadly weapon that you probably aren't doing it based on which one happens to be handy. Depending on how drunk he was he shouldn't have been able to see straight either, and thus not been able to aim effectively. If he was sober enough to aim then he was sober enough to fight on some level. People are doing their best to move away from the original post with their arguments, but that seems dishonest to me. The topic of discussion is not gun laws in general, but a tragedy of a father killing his own child.

There also is absolutely no realistic way to get rid of guns. They are not that complicated to make, and are currently present. So long as there is a military anywhere then there will be high powered and easily available guns. Short of having world peace happen you cannot realistically expect there to be zero guns in a country, and a challenge you to name even one.

To the people saying that guns dont kill people, have a look at the homicide rate in the US compared to the rest of the developed world and tell me there isnt a massive issue there..

Except he wasn't 3 meters away. He wasn't 3 feet away. He was right next to the father.

Edit: He also valued his vengeance over his son's life. A child's life is valued far higher than a $4000 junker (see I can make up random prices too!)

@Johnsobas
Many of those items would be conviniently located. All the same, your argument falls into the "not a fair fight" category and that is not a good defense.
