well the issue is the combination of having both.  At least the kid would have a fighting chance if the dad didn't have a gun.  If the dad was extremely drunk it shouldn't be that hard to get away the dad probably can't even walk straight.  It takes a hell of a lot more guts to get a knife and stab someone than to use a gun also.  You can easily get drunk and start pointing a gun around, but you aren't gonna get drunk and forcefully stab someone without having some idea what you're doing.

There's no realistic way you can get rid of alcohol no matter how long we talk about it.  Getting rid of guns is realistic (although in the US' case it is quite difficult) and many countries do it.  Is there any country that has a ban on alcohol?  I don't know of one.  The US tried it once and it failed miserably.

I find the assertion that someone is willing to shoot at people while drunk, but not stab them to be absurd. This wasn't him firing off rounds at a bottle on the fence or something stupid like that. This was specific and targetted brutality. I'll grant you a fighting chance. The problem with that argument is it moves away from the murder being the issue, and towards not being a fair fight. That would mean you could "solve" the problem by giving the son a gun as well. That is not a good argument in my eyes.

I would also say if you are attacking your own child with a deadly weapon that you probably aren't doing it based on which one happens to be handy. Depending on how drunk he was he shouldn't have been able to see straight either, and thus not been able to aim effectively. If he was sober enough to aim then he was sober enough to fight on some level. People are doing their best to move away from the original post with their arguments, but that seems dishonest to me. The topic of discussion is not gun laws in general, but a tragedy of a father killing his own child.

There also is absolutely no realistic way to get rid of guns. They are not that complicated to make, and are currently present. So long as there is a military anywhere then there will be high powered and easily available guns. Short of having world peace happen you cannot realistically expect there to be zero guns in a country, and a challenge you to name even one.
