Forums - Sales - Xbox division profit nearly doubles, 34 million 360s sold!?

My guess is Microsoft is building up supplies to have enough 360's for the holidays.

Also maybe they expected a bigger effect from the price-cut.

Just guessing :p

So how much is the E&D Division in the red since the original Xbox came around? Its nice to see they are starting to pick up the pace diggin themselves out of that hole.

I dont remember anymore, but for what it's worth Sony has probably lost more with PS3 than MS has with the entire Xbox project (1 and 360). Or it should be close anyway.

The last two fiscal years (which end each June 30)the Xbox division profited 469m and 169m or around there. So about 650m profit. But remember before that they had a 1B write off just for RROD, so they haven't even made that back. They start off this fiscal year with a nice 312m profit now.

Then on the other hand theres no telling what is Xbox profit/loss and what is other products in the division either. My gut feeling is if anything Xbox profit is higher than division profit (in other words, rest of the division loses money).

What makes you think Sony has lost as much, if not more on the PS3 than MS did on the original xBox?

I mean the PS3 was sold at $600 for quite some time where as the original xBox had a dramatic price cut almost adjacent to its launch.

Then there's also the whole debacle MS had with the hardware suppliers, preventing the xBox from being made cost efficient, while Sony steadily have been cutting production costs for the PS3.

I don't think the PS3 has cost as much as the entire Xbox division, but the PS3 has pretty much wiped out any profits the PS2 made and eating into PS1 profits as well.

"According to a Kotaku report, Sony lost USD 2.16 billion in 2007 and USD 1.16 billion in 2008 on the PS3. The console allegedly cost over USD 800 to manufacture but which was sold in the USD 500-600 range when it was launched in 2006."

Interesting, though I can imagine some of this operating loss being worth it in context to the royalties the company earns on Blu-Rays.

And like with MS some of the operating loss must be from future proofing investments. Not so much creating a market but also research(hardware and software), publishing network, studio acquisitions and so forth.

Can't imagine it being too much doom and gloom for these companies. :)

get back under you're bridge troll. VGC is right, MS is wrong.

Yeah.. ok, so if Sony said this,  VGChartz would still be wrong? LOL!!

Let's face it, they undertracked the count. It happens when you base your numbers on estimates. If M$ said they were at 34 million sold in August, that would mean they are probably close to 34.4 million worldwide as of today. The PS3 still has a long way to go to catch the XBox 360. They are making grounds, but I predict a new XBox launching in 2011 or 2012.

yes, they would still be wrong.

We go over this almost every single time ms or sony says anything about installed base. I've asked the same thing as you before. The point is, you're wrong.

31.4 + 2.1 = 33.5

33.5m shipped until September's end according to MS itself, look at their latest 2009 report - http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4487

There is no way MS got 500k X360's sold from Oct 1 and still had the usual 500k in stock. If such, MS shipped a million consoles in twenty days and thus it's averaging 333k a week...

Ummm yes actually they probably did, this is holiday time, very big sales. Or preparing for very big sales in any case.

Last Oct-Dec quarter they shipped 6m. That's 2m/month, granted I'm sure it was Dec weighted...or maybe Nov weighted depending on lead time.

I found that chart Seece. Looks like I was a little off on the $10B number, and the chart hasnt been updated since last year. But according to this the Xbox division was at $6.3B in the red at the end of FY 2008.

You got it wrong. That MS executive claimed over 34m X360s sold thus far. Look, MS shipped 2.1 million consoles from july until september which brought the total of X360s shipped lifetime all the way up to 33.5 million. These are consoles shipped still - around 500k-1m of shipped figures remain at retailers, distributors and so on. So, contradiciting his company's financial report, he said X360 sold 3m in this period, over 140% of it's own shipping numbers. This is no different from when some Sony dude claimed over 140m PS2s sold when the shipped numbers fell 7m or such from it, back in 2007 or the like.

Possibly, I also wonder how much lower the PS division has come down, see as they havn't been making too much profit lately. I asked Source for an updated version if he has one, I'll post it in here or on your wall when/if he has one.
