Forums - Gaming - EA Dev: 'Game STORIES Are CRAP'! - (So he NEVER played MGS)?

I agree.

95% of games have crap stories. The games that try to put emphasis on story like Gears of war 2 and Uncharted are the worst offenders...cause they often neglect gamplay to tell a semi retarded story.

Of course there are exceptions. MGS1, MGS3, Chrono Trigger, Shenmue, Condemned...etc.

I absolutely disagree, Uncharted has great cut scenes & a decent story, definetely not "worst offenders"

Game like HAZE are worst offenders, as the devs HYPED up its story a bit pre-release & the rest is history.

While I respect your opinion, story in Uncharted 1 did not deliver a single new idea to its audience. Its a rip off from various movies, games and other forms of medium. Dead Space is another one.

Gears 2 is another mess. Hiring voice actors to deliver those lines hurts my ears.

But stories are always subjective. Soomeone that has not played Tomb Raider, or seen indiana jones movies or hasn't read Davinci Code would think the story is pretty kick ass in Uncharted.

darth, pointing to MGS doesn't really disprove the point. i never played MGS so i'll just take your word that it's a great story but in general story telling in video games is pretty poor. plus, most games that do tell a good story don't really tell the story via gameplay, they tell it via cut scenes with isn't actually a video game, it's a video game movie break.

IGN said GTA4's story was "oscar level quality"

They were wrong, but they weren't absolutely completely wrong as the story was good!

Nowhere near "crap" or anything like that, the story accept was accomplished well.

@your bolded

I think Heavy Rain will change that......right CGI?

100% agree with him. Games shouldn't be movies. Neverever!

The only exception when games can tell a great linear story is when it is built into the surrounding atmosphere, as in Half Life 1-2, or Super Mario Brothers when there is little to no dialogue and text, but the world around you somehow tells a story without pretending to be a movie.

If the same plot had been in a movie, it would have been panned. The praise came from reviewers who want to believe gaming is becoming a legitimate art form. (gaming already is a legitimate art form, just not in the way they want)

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Something doesn't have to be new to be good. Uncharted really impressed me as a game.

That being said, is the story really deep and original? No. But does it need to be? No.

Fallaout 3 had a great story.... no cutscenes at all!

I dont know about you but if games eliminated cutscenes, dialogs and stories it would suck for me and I would just play some types of games and not as much as I do now.

99% of games have a shit story
99% of movies have a shit story
99% of books have a shit story

Just buy the 1%, or learn to enjoy explosions without story to tie them in

i 100% agree with that last part.

..but really, for me it comes down to these 2 points.

1. despite a handful of games with good stories, i have yet to play a game where the story was great because it was a game as oppose to the senerio where the story was great despite being a game.

2. video games haven't spanned the availible genres well.  yes, we have lots of great action stories but where are the other genres? comedies? romance? dramas? documenties? ect. and so forth...
