Forums - Gaming - Honest question do you think we're in twilight of this current generation?

All things being relative, I think we're just a little over halfway through this gen. This is the point where we get our "Vice Cities" or "Wind Wakers". Devs are finally becoming fully aware of the console's potential, and we're going to start getting refined and polished versions of past experiences. And, while I expect huge things near this gen's end, I anticipate more evolution and less revolution.

7th gen doesn't end until Nintendo says so!!!

Microsoft gaming profit looks like it is up ( games are mixed with HD Zune but overall the profit for that division was up almost 100%).

Can't say for Sony yet, have to wait for their results....

You're mixing up stuff by the way.

How is the fact that Nintendo is making a lot of profit good for the industry if very few others players benefit from it???

Show me the third parties reaping huge amount of money thanks to the Wii....( Wii software sales are flat so far this year in US, 360 and PS3 software sales are up ( 360 up 10%. PS3 up 20%)

Profits are still well below what Nintendo is making on the Wii, and unlike Nintendo, MS lost a ton of money on the Xbox and 360, long before making a profit, Sony is likely to make a loss. Other companies don't make a profit on the Wii, because they don't approach the Wii the way Nintendo does, they think they can dump anything on the Wii and make big sales, but that doesn't work out, that's not Nintendo's fault, but the third parties themselves

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Someone disrupted this page... Malstrom?

No.

First half of 2010 is packed, but we don't know if SMG2, Metroid, Tales of Graces will make it by then. Versus XIII and Zelda are likely late 2010/early 2011 releases. DQ X is way late into the gen and that game will be epic. Natal will be coming late 2010 IIRC. etc.

Good games continue to come out even after the gen is over or close to over.

Exactly all of what Soriku said.  While people, even Wada of Square Enix is predicting a new Wii by early 2012, games being planned in his own COMPANY show this is hardly possible (Dragon Quest X).  As for a lack of good games coming this gen, that's dependant on your view of what good games are.  For me, I still have plenty, from everything Nintendo still has to make (Metroid other M/Mario Galaxy 2/Zelda Wii) to a host of third party Wii and DS games not even yet announced or released.  And that's not even accounting for the PS3, which is just now reaching its strongest point, and the 360, which is still going strong.

If anything, we're reaching the mid-point of this generation.  The only one that might jump the gun and release a console early is Microsoft because they feel Sony is catching up to them.  Otherwise I feel Nintendo will still come out with their console first, revealing it in late 2012 and coming out with it in 2013.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I don't think we are in it's twilight... that's meaning the moment before ending, right?

I think we are halfway, and that perhaps Microsoft is nearing the 1/3d point but that's still up for debate depending on how viable Natal will be.

I base this now purely on game-potential and salesnumbers. Saleswise we are halfway roughly. Last generation saw about 200 million in sales, currently we are at above 100 million and the industry is still growing so it can be assumed that we will reach a larger amount then 200 million before we can speak of the end of the generation.

Game wise, a lot of projects are still expected (God of War 3, GT5, NSMBWii and many others in the near feature while big hitters like Zelda are not even on the horizon yet). And witht he boost in Wand/Natal WM+ technology it should create a new surge in creativity for developers.

On gaming sites, I tend to associate havoc and Malstrom.

Then how can you say Nintendo success is good for industry ?

Nintendo success is good for Nintendo and that's about it.

Whether it rises or fall, it really doesn't look like it's taking anyone with it...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

because, even if much of the industry collapses, Nintendo will keep on chugging along, not to mention, they drive much of the growth in the industry and come up with the disruptions needed to keep the industry healthy. The only reason others aren't coming along, is because they aren't trying, they release garbage, and then whine when Wii owners refuse to buy it
