Forums - PC - Game Informer: downgrading MW2 is a good thing, and dissenters are nerds

Now that you mention it...... other than MMOs, I cant think of many big PC launches.

Supreme Commander , and SinsOASE

Hmm. Turn based hardcore niche strat games.... ( I mean like Galactic Civ and stuff, not referring to SC and SINS which are RTS)

Battlefield 2 was almost 5 years ago now.... BF2 was great. Also, BF2 was a huge seller on PC, selling 1.25 mil in its first 2 weeks and millions more over its lifespan plus one good and very successful expansion, and one OK but considerably less successful one. ( oh, PC gaming was already dead back then too, remember)

CoD is only big multiplayer FPS launches outside Valve, and CoD has been totally consolified..... CoD games are fun but since 4, but not very PC oriented. So console sales do better... this plus Halo is largely what gives people the impression that Consoles are the "Main thing"

And we have Total War series.....

Orange Box

But yeah... past few years have been "age of the MMO" where most of the big money on PC has gone to MMO development, and most of the rest is shitty console ports...... good PC stuff has mostly been mods of older games, and strategy games.

Red Alert 3 sucked though. =/

Open your eyes, there have been tons of great PC exclusive games recenty, far more than any platform. It is mainly due to people's ignorance that they think otherwise, and you are proof of it. You're implying there's not many FPS exclusive on PC, yet here's a few good FPS games out on PC recently:

- Crysis
- Crysis Warhead
- Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
- Stalker: Clear Sky
- ArmA
- ArmA 2

+ tons of other shooters like Killing Floor, America's Army, Quake Live, etc... Xbox 360 doesn't offer anywhere PC has has offered in FPS games.

Crysis was extremely mediocre, STALKER was pretty good and awesome and all but it was buggy, I was also unaware ARMA 2 came out.

Are Arma and Stalker and Crysis big multiplayer? I guess more pertinent, is are they big launches or big sales?

I havent seen much great about Crysis Arma or Stalker.

Everyone knows Crysis was a game to benchmark a new system with, was oriented at the super high-end, sold like 1.5 million and then CryTek went and started publically CryIng that they should have sold 5 million or whatever except for piracy and that they were switching to consoles..... and were largely responsible for fueling the PC-dying rhetoric for that period. Of course the only good thing about their game (gfx leapfrog) isnt really possible on the console - lots of devs already pushing current gen hardware.... wonder how thats working out for them. Anyhow, CryTek are persona non grata to me on basis of them being whiny douchebags so ya I tend to forget about Crysis. Besides, I have never heard anyone talk about how good the game is, only how well their PC can or cant run it.

Arma was a broken niche game, that the community fixed up correct? While that is a testament to the inherent strength of PC gaming - the community - I dont think it really fits the context of what I was referring to. Also not sure it qualifies as recent.

I know 0 about Stalker other than it was apparently a good seller in Europe?

Anyhow, what I was implying is that more "big" launches are console oriented recently. CoD4 xbox version probably outsold all the games you named in your post combined. And while many PC games are indeed good, I dont think most people consider Arma for example AAA.

I suppose Crysis could be a good example though, considering it outsold most console FPS games... after all, its not every console FPS that is huge - its really confined to a small group of franchises ( Halo, Cod ) that are superhuge.

Still not sure how my implying that PC is getting the shaft on many ports, and hasnt had "big" ( aka AAA + mass marketed) launches very often is somehow proof of the ignorance of a humanity that does not realize there are many good PC games. ( Oh, I also play quakelive every day)

For what its worth, yesterday the tide turned a little IMO as Dragon Age is certainly AAA - and is absolutely not a shitty console port. PC version is clearly superior, it is rather apparent the game was developed with PC in mind first and foremost, which is quite a refreshing change. Xbox version is good, PS3 version is great, PC version is fucking amazing in maxxed settings , AA, 1080p and not a drop of lag to be found. Oh, and world builder + support for community.

I think the market will swing back in PC favor shortly, or is in the proccess of doing so. Largely because of the longevity of the Core Duo + 8800GT platform - but that topic is worth its own thread.
