The 'u' and the 're' instead of 'er' (theatre/theater) are French leftovers. I'm English and happy to be rid of them. It's not like we haven't changed our own language over the years or dost thou thinketh differently?

Maybe they changed it so they didn't have to pay royalties or 'republicties' as they're called in America.

I have never seen that word in my life.   Its royalities here

Check again.

Apart from about the metric system.

The company I work for uses the Metric system.   But its not like it matters,  one isnt superior to the other, its just what each country was brought up on.

I did a Google search for "'republicties" and got Banana Republic Ties.

Ever wonder why the entire world apart from you went through the trouble of changing from imperial to metric?

It's because in practical terms - especially for engineering - the metric system is many many times better.

Well only because you brought it up

I don't mean to bring it up as a debate topic. It's like the thread we had a few months back about what to call it.

Ah,  well I wont share my thoughts on it.   Americans have gotten enough hate in this thread to begin with

Come on now, most of it has just been light hearted joking. You make fun of us for having a "U" randomly in our words, and we make fun of the American spelling of aluminum.

I admit the lazy part was bad and uncalled for, but it's mostly been banter so far.

Sorry if I have caused you offence, I and a few others may have misread the tone of the thread.

LOL, Yes I did.

I even checked an online dictionary and got nothing,  and none of the suggested words look even close to what he is looking for.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/republicties

But I did find this

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/royalties

With all the different spellings it's hard not to.
