never knew 5% was high.

andif my keyboard wasntbroken i wouldnt type more.

I had same problem, called Sony, they wanted $160 + tax. I went to a few places to see if they could replace it for cheaper, a few could, but they couldn't guarantee it would work 100%, and I don't have enough knowledge, so I sent it to Sony instead of risking it. This was in Canadian dollars and was before the price cut, but if you have the knowledge you should go for it.

@Aj_habfan

damn for 160 youcould buy a wii/360.

I would try to fixittho, all your saved games/DLC/ trophieswill be gone.

A Wii would cost me about $260 after tax, 360 arcade about $230.

You can always backup your data onto a flashdrive, and DLC/trophies are saved onto your PSN account. Since your problem is just with the blu-ray drive, they won't touch the HDD, mine was kept exactly the same.

E-bay; buy a BD from a PS3 being parted out with a dead logic board.

If you're not savvy enough to use a set of screwdrivers and swap the drive out yourself, shouldn't be too hard to find someone who has assembled/disassembled a computer that can.

All your HDD data will be intact and the only thing you lose is the ability to send it into SCE for future repairs should anything else happen. SCE won't accept consoles for repair that have the factory seal broken.

I don't know if that was a typo, but how can you have a 40GB SKU that is 22 months out of warranty (assuming a 12 month standard warranty) when the 40GB SKU didn't debut until around November 2007, or 23 months ago?

23 months minus 12 months (time under warranty) would put it 11 months out of warranty, assuming you bought your 40GB SKU the day they became available.

what have 5% ? ps3 never been so high, if saying out of 32 million xbox only 5% had a rrod or any broken hardware, well you are wrong.

My 40gig PS3 BluRay drive (KEM-400AAA -> old one) is almost broken. It only plays games if i put a cleaning disc in before and let it run twice.

Unfortunately my warranty is 22 months over due, so no chance for getting a new/refurbished one 4 free.

ok what can i do?

A)

Buy a new one (preferably a phat one, cause i like the phat ones better)

-> do you know any good/ cheap offers/ bundles. its important to me that these bundles include non 18+ games (cant be reselled via ebay)

B)

Buy a bluRay drive and substitute it with the broken one

-> any good sites? amazon currently charges my around 80 euro and a additional 17 euro for shipping to Austria.

Anybody else had the same problem, what did you do?

Please tell me you arent using a cleaning disc with the brushes on them?   Cause then you are to blame for your PS3 drive going bad

lol.  By your logic MS should provide Xbox Live for free.
