I think that it would have a better shot at reaching 15 million if it were called Halo 4....I understand why it's not, and I understand that it will sell boatloads either way, but for people on the fringe, people who maybe heard that ODST was a glorified expansion (I'm not saying that it was) might think that Reach is a similar deal, those people might not buy Reach.

Of course feel free to continue speculating but I just firmly believe it won't sell 15 mil. That is all.

You have a point there. That's why Reach will need a quiet big advertising so that some people don't mistake it for an expansion.

Once Reach is released you can count on Halo 3's sales dropping off a cliff.  It would be like people purchasing Halo 2 when halo 3 was out.  Not really much incentive really because everyone will be in the new game.  ODST never gave anyone the incentive to stop playing h3.

Fair enough but that still doens't give a full justification as to why some people think it'll sell 15 mil, even more than Halo 3. Let's assume that Halo 3 reaches 11.5 mil by the time Reach is released. Even after the release of Reach, Halo 3 continues to sell so it reaches 12 mil. So some people are saying that  Reach will sell more copies than Halo 3 in 2 yrs or how long it ever takes for Reach to sell 15 mil?! That's VERY highly unlikely to happen.

Yes Bungie is developing Reach. Yes they're making it from a new engine. Yes they're probably going to introduce new gameplay. Yes the book might've been good. But all that ain't gonna prove that Reach would sell 15 mil. I truly believe that no 360 game will sell outsell Halo 3. I said this previously in a different topic. Not even a Halo game can kill Halo 3 in sales.

And don't get the impression that I said that because of the way ODST is selling. ODST doesn't even belong in this argument. No one can really say that Reach won't sell a lot because of how ODST is going because most people would know that ODST was just a simple 'expansion' and Reach I presume would turn out to be a full game that's worth the $60.

 

 

 

I am no way saying that Reach will make it to 15 million for sure.  And I think it will be difficult.  But the main reason I think it will is because this thing is going to be epic.  There will be 100's of Spartans on the field of battle and hopefully it will all play out like a massive can of kickassery.  If the game stays true to the book, it will.

i really dont see any hd game selling 15 million across a single sku, like kantor said.

i can see it selling around the same amount as halo 3 or maybe slightly above it. with those turned off by halo wars/odst or just sick of halo balancing out newer fans to the series and an increases in install base. imo, of course.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about (you're not the first person). The drop in sales is typical, take a look at Halo 3 sales, it's the same pattern. ODST will easily make it up to 4m before Reach comes out. Halo 3 made 5m in first 3 weeks (with huge drop after first week), then it made another 5m in 2 years. That's the way games sell.

Sequels just generally don't do as well for big franchises, unless an increase in quality is there, and Halo 3 set the bar too high in my opinion.

Gran Turismo 3 outsold Gran Turismo 4

Metal Gear Solid 2 outsold Metal Gear Solid 3

Final Fantasy X outsold Final Fantasy XII

 

Halo 3 is around 10.30 million and still rising, who knows how high it will end up, but I don't think it will be reached (harrrrrrrrrr).

 

ah but...

halo 3 > halo2 > halo CE

and there are plenty of other instances of  the same.  COD springs to mind.

 

Halo ODST will not outsell Halo 3.

COD 5 sold less than COD 4.

WaW and MW are clearly two different games, but if you like to look at things the other way we can see that MW2 will outsell MW and WaW.
