that was expected since piracy is so huge on pc so why put dedicated servers. piracy affected pc hugely e.g. crysis is now in development for consoles and pc doesn't have almost any AAA exclusives. If piracy on pc keeps increasing you can expect the next call of duty pc version to be canceled

Links? Evidence? Statistics?

Or are you just saying what you heard from people who heard from people that base their opinions on stereotypes in an attempt to gain more support for their system of choice?

Oh and FYI Crysis 2 is coming to consoles because Crytek wants to liscence out Cryengine 3 to console developers so they can make lots of cash, not because of piracy.

no they did not develop crysis 2 to license cryengine 3. here is a site http://www.develop-online.net/news/32950/Crytek-never-planned-to-license-CryENGINE. I never mentioned anyhting on any other systems about what you said at the system of choice. Link ok here goes http://kotaku.com/5056532/why-no-gears-of-war-2-for-pc-well-piracy-for-one. everdom you have so much fail in what your saying. i posted links to prove that i dont guess stuff i know what i am talking about.

@ elticker: so you posted a link saying that in 2002 they didnt plan to liscence THE ORIGINAL CRYENGINE, CE2 and 3 however were made to be liscenced out and they have been several times.

@ both: A dev trying to account for less than expected sales can easily blame piracy, however there is no clear evidence that a pirated copy means a lost sale, in the same way that people who have dozens of DS games on R4's probably wouldnt have bought anywhere near that many in reality, because people are constrainted by money.

Have you ever wondered why the great PC developers never complain about piracy? because they realise that if you make a game that is good enough it is a non-issue.

Case and point : http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18843

according to the article you posted there are 260 million pc gamers and i fail to see why games on pc sell less than games on consoles. that also doesnt change the fact that you said crysis 2 was developed for consoles cause they want to license cryengine 3 when they are acctually making crysis 2 on consoles due to piracy issues on pc and their game topping the charts of pirated games. Crytek is supposebly a great pc developer that pushes pc to its limit and it complains about piracy.

PC sells far more games than any console. The thing is:
- PC games are on average much cheaper than console games.
- PC supports extremely varied business models with big success.
- PC is a very tough and competitive market, with thousands of games coming out each year on PC.
- PC games keep selling for years and years, sometimes decades.

Crytek shouldn't really complain when their game sold 1.5 million in only 6 months. By PC standard that's huge, and Crysis could reach 3 or 4 millions sales lifetime.

alright guys, we're already tired of the piracy discussion and this thread is about the dick move by Activision/IW, we have enough derailed threads

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

^yeah sry, kinda got caught up on it.

However i did have a point! This is a move to screw over PC gamers and gain a tight control over what is generally a very open platform. Not any attempt to stop piracy, which can easily be done utilising a steam like system.

yep, I agree it's about gaining control, but I'm not entirely convinced by the DLC argument. honestly, I'm not even sure what to think about this. if it was like RFG where they simply ported the game, I'd understand. but MW had dedicated servers and it seems like they're actually taking their time to work on this IW.net thing.

but it's really suspicious that they are announcing it weeks away from the launch with little to no details about the "service"

MW2 is going to be Steam-integrated. And they're even going to use Valve's VAC for anti-cheating.

IW is really screwing everything up. The real reason for removing dedicated servers is really to be able to sell DLC to PC gamers.

@ Salaminiser:  i'm not even all that worried about paying for maps (it sucks, but hey i paid for wow for a year :P) im just worried about the kind of serves ill be able to find in Australia as our net just isnt up to the standard of the US, Europe and Japan.

Firstly: thanks for actually reading the article, youd be surprised how often people dont.

Secondly: If they were abandoning the PC entirely for Crysis 2 then the argument may hold more weight, however the fact is that crytek has already strated liscensing out CE3 to devs. As a middleware developer, the move to consoles was more about expanding their possible liscencing oppertunities, as there just isnt much drive for a PC exclusive, resource intensive engine.

article on CE3 liscening: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25653

yeah i was surprised when i jioned vg in march 2009 but now its almost standard that most vg users just assume what the article is about instead of reading it. i have been reading articles since march 2009 and dont bother to post much.

You can't really compare MMOs with overpriced DLCs like that. MMOs give so many features that you wouldn't be able to experience anywhere else, and WoW is updated often and give you so many awesome stuff each update for free.

IW and Activision are ruining their own game due to greed.

same here, I don't see any reason to buy a game if I know there won't be any Brazilian servers. and what's worse, now that MW2 won't have dedicated servers, the current MW ones will continue to serve MW and won't migrate to MW2. so the players won't even stop playing MW due to lack of servers (which would probably happen if MW2 had dedicated servers)

100k People have now signed the petition against the removal of Dedicated Servers on Modern Warfare 2!!!
