I dont know who this Erik Brudvig individual is but his take on Magnacarta 2 is utterly disgusting. It appears from this review he is the type of person whose only known exposure to a J(K in this instance)RPG is Final Fantasy USA (Mystic Quest).
I am 5 hours into the game (got it yesterday) so far and off the top, coming off Star Ocean 4, the voice acting in this game is surpurb. Docking for not having Japanese voice acting...that alone right there should tell you something. What new ideas was he looking for, im curious? I have played a many RPG that use snipits of previous games and then as the story progresses, makes it their own, this game is no different. The gameplay mechanics is fluid and the battle system require thinking or youll consantly run out of stamania, the game ingame turtioral gives excellent explanation of the gameplay mechanics. The quest system is the game as any W/J RPG, you have ones that required and others that are optional, no different than that of FF12, WOW or Fable 2. Sometime quests help present a situation more fluidly than that of a cut scene or dialog. Lasting appeal should be based on how the game effects you, not by how many times you play it. Ive only breath of fire 3 once through and I believe its one of the best RPGs out, I dont need to play it again to justify it.
So in my conclusion, based on any future RPG whether be western or japanese or Korean, IGN should not score it higher than a 6.8.
If you are a fan of J(K) RPGs (as I am) and you want to add this game to your x360 collection, go ahead and do so, if you want to try it out first, it is a good rent, as I see the battle system not pleasing everyone.
I am between this game and demon souls so ill add more but this is why I take leaps of faith when I purchase games and not trust reviews.
| 6.0 | Presentation No new ideas. Magnacarta 2 takes absolutely no chances. |
| 7.0 | Graphics Serviceable art direction and decent visuals. |
| 7.0 | Sound Lots of voice acting. Most of it isn't awful. Japanese voice tracks would have been nice, though. |
| 7.0 | Gameplay The real-time combat is a good start, but the quest design and lack of evolution through the game don't help things. |
| 6.0 | Lasting Appeal It's a pretty long game, but not one you'd be likely to play through twice. |
| 6.8 |
OVERALL (out of 10 / not an average) |
