Forums - Gaming - Forget Huxley.. And the smaller scale M.A.G. This is Dust 514.

I wasn't meaning how many on a server, I meant how many in 1 game at a time. In MAG you have 256 players all on one map battling it out against each other.

In this game will it be thousands going up against each other at once?

1 server = 1 game

same goes to MAG - each server can handle 1 game.

It is really hard to convey a MMOFPS experience to someone viewing it in terms of your typical FPS. A "map" doesn't really have close to the same meaning. Not even remotely. Planetside would have hundreds (closer than a thousand than not at times) in some areas, but they wouldn't be "actively" fighting each other liek you would expect on a given "map."

To answer the question in a slightly less cryptic way, yes you should probably expect it. EVE has well over a thousand in single battles at times. Literally over a thousand people shooting at each other. This kind of large scale engagement is relatively rare though. At any given moment tens of thousands of players are actively trying to beat the other "team" though. They are directly playing against each other in a different type of arena though.

Title should be "Forget about MAG... and the smaller scale Huxley". Huxley was less players than MAG is.

Anyways, how many players is this game?

Probably thousands. Possibly tens of thousands depending. CCP is huge on signle shard games. That is, every player is essentially on one sole server. This is how EVE runs (up to around 150-200k players I believe) and it is I expect this game to run.

@john
Release date is sometime next year I believe. Possibly early 2011 though. The noise from the developers has been that they have been working on it for a while.

Huxley was said to have thousands of players, but trimmed down for each server. But anyone could play against anyone. And also go against normal foes like in WOW. It was a different far bigger game than MAG, so yeah MAG was smaller scale.

See, MAG isn't really an MMO. It's just a multiplayer game with alot of people. Like maps. Whereas Huxley and Dust 514 are huge MMO games.

I am going to go ahead and assume you didn't mean to quote me for this one. The concept of players joining a map to play is much closer to Diablo than a MMO. If that is what MAG does, and Huxley does  not do that then I would have to agree that Huxley is the bigger game.

That sounds incredible then.

I was curious because in the case with Huxley they first had to trim it from 100 vs 100 to 60 vs 60, with the PC being either 100 vs 100 or 120 vs 120. Then from what we know now, they seem to have given up on it entirely.

In the case with MAG we had people saying that 256 players was too much and would experience incredible amounts of lag.

I was wondering how, considering all that, that this game could host thousands at a time like that.

Not trying to knock the game, because I think it looks and sounds incredible.

As for Huxley, this is what I could find on it.

Going on a quest felt like going through a quest in WoW, except it didn’t look anywhere near as boring or as ugly. Seriously, how do people enjoy playing WoW? Anyway, you and three friends can go on a quest together and this is where you’ll fight the Hybrids.

As for the gameplay, imagine the Unreal Tournament games. The overall feel is very Unreal Tournament style, mostly because the game is using the Unreal Engine. I only saw about 12 people at best in the online mode so it remains to be seen how well a 32 vs 32 battle will play out. It at least looked fun and very fast paced. There are multiple maps of course, and all of the maps will increase/decrease in size depending on how many people are playing on a map.

I was told that while there won’t be 100 vs 100 battles when Huxley launches later this year, we can expect to see the 32 vs 32 cap rise as the developers continue working on the game after it’s released. Maybe we will get the 200 man battles after all.

The game failed so far to even reach the 100 vs 100 promise and is currently capped at just 32 vs 32 player deathmatch styled play.

Anyways, here is the link.

OT: I watched the first couple of videos and maybe I missed it somewhere, but do we have an estimated release period for this game?

How similar is it to EVE? Should I check that out to get an idea of how this game will end up?

Why would you want 100 v 100 in the first place? You enjoy just random spraying of bullets with no tactical element? Bigger doesn't always mean better. Personally I don't think this game looks all that amazing and the vehicles and ships look eerily similar to halo ones in that trailer.
Speaking of upcoming shooters I want to know whats up with project offset. If you don't know what that is look it up. That is a game that has some cool ideas for it. Too bad its probably never gonna see the light of day.
