Forums - Sales - Final Fantasty vs Dragon Quest - Which is more popular in Japan.

Wait the guy who did Dragonball, the biggest anime thats popular the world over with a 70+ million fanbase, created Dragon Quest?

Well that kinda explains it Dragonballs the most successful manga and anime to ever be created.

However its ironic Dragon Quest never got popular in the west whilst DBZ went on to be the most watched cable show in US, Spain and other countries.

He didn't create Dragon Quest.  A man by the name of Yuji Horii created the series and oversaw the game as the main scenario writer and producer.  Akira Toriyama did the monster and character designs and oversaw some other story influences.

Both of them still work on the series to this day.

Dragon Quest but it's not too much larger than Final Fantasy so let's not get carried away with that. Really we could even put them on the same level.

Oh he was just theartist.

Are the DQ games any good? are they better than the FF games?

Isnt DQ8 the only 3D one?

DQ8 is a masterpiece and DS remake are Xxcellent as well..DQ stays true to its roots I appreciate that..unlike another franchise

Isnt 3. DQ8 the only 3D one?

1 Yes

2 To some, I say DQ is a more consistent series while the best of FF is better than the best of DQ.

3 DQIX is 3d as well.

Seriously. not in Japan.

OP: It seems to me every few months someone would ask this question here.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

It depends on your tastes.  The way I like to answer that question is by describing each series strengths.  Final Fantasy focuses on Story and going for the 'cenematic feel' (aka trying to be like a movie) as described by series creator Sakaguchi.  Dragon Quest on the other hand focus on the roots of the RPG series, focusing on exploration, NPC interaction, item collection and gameplay, as described by series creator Yuji Horii.

If you like games that are more open-ended, with more exploration, a higher challenge, emphasis on keeping your characters well equipped and a deeper combat engine, you'll like Dragon Quest.

If you like games that focus more on story and long dialogue sequences, let you know when major bosses are coming, lay out the path you need to take and have a more 'active' or 'free' battle engine, or frankly if you're just looking for a game more like Final Fantasy, then this isn't a game for you.

To add to this, Akira Toriyama is not only the lead designer of DQ and creator of Dragon Ball, he also is the lead designer of games like Blue Dragon, Tobal Nº 1 and Nº2, and the highly praised Chrono Trigger, Square had a dream team in that game:

Hironobu Sakaguchi

Yoshinori Kitase

Yasunori Mitsuda (lead composer of this game, Uematsu was his mentor, even recommending him at Square and helping him with this game)

Nobuo Uematsu

Takashi Tokita

Akira Toriyama

Yuji Horii

Masato Kato (Known before this for his work on the Ninja Gaiden NES games)

Now, back to Dragon Quest, here are the original boxarts, they're another reason why DQ games are so popular in Japan

DQ FAMICOM boxarts down

As opposed to the US boxarts that were really lame, at least the Megaman boxart artists made us laugh...
