AMD OpenCL drivers reveal new Radeon HD 5900 series?

As you've undoubtedly heard, AMD recently launched its Radeon HD 5000 GPUs -- all of which have been 5700 or 5800 series cards. Yesterday, the company released a new Open CL-compliant driver for present Radeon HD 4000 and 5000 video cards that Fudzilla says reveals an undisclosed Radeon HD 5000 offering.

The Tech Report looked at the driver's INF files, and sure enough, in addition to the three Radeon HD 5700 and two 5800 listings are two 5900 entries. The site suggests that the three 5700 entries account for the 5770, as well as 512MB and 1GB versions of the 5750, while the two 5800 listings are almost surely the 5850 and 5870 cards.

It seems probable that AMD may be preparing a temporary counter to Nvidia's Fermi-based GPUs, but what exactly does the company have in store for the Radeon HD 5900 series?

If the 5870's as powerful as it is, I wonder what the 5900s will end up doing.  If they do indeed exist.

Most likely the 5900s will be overclocked versions of the 5870s. Atleast thats what they did with the 4890 last gen. I highly doubt they will be completly new cards

Long Live SHIO!

The 5900s are the X2 variants this time around. 5950 and 5970 will essentially be the same if they were called 5850 X2 and 5870 X2 respectively.

Tease.

Oh, okay. Aww, I got excited over nothing. :(

Does that mean the GPU will use a dual core clock speed?

Its just a different name for the same thing.

Tease.

It's looking like those will be the X2 cards.

Lol, why would AMD need a counter to a non-existent product? I wish Nvidia would release Fermi, so AMD's prices would come down, but it's not happening.

Yeah, I know, me too, I really wanna pick up a 5870.

It's funny that people are waiting for Nvidia to finally release their new line of GPUs so they can pass on buying them and pick up ATI's current offerings at adjusted prices instead.

I'd just assumed the 5870 and 5850 would be initially priced at $299 and $199 respectively without taking into account that they would be exclusive to the DX11 generation for months ahead of Nvidia.

I'm in the same boat. Unless Fermi produces significant performance increases without an excessive premium, I'll be sticking with ATI for my next build.
