The difference here is that Sony created/funded Blu-ray. It's not like Plasmas and LCD's where they take what exists and give the consumer options. They created Blu-ray and spent years pushing it onto consumers just to turn around and go the digital only way, and fall back on the excuse of 'giving consumers options'.

But can you blame them? ......Nope.

Panasonic is the major player in the Blu-ray scene,  they have more invested in it than Sony does.  Sony doesnt own Blu-ray, or do they have complete rights to it,  they had a hand in creating it and was a one of the big players in the creation of it but not the biggest.

yup

Sony  was mainly with just talking about the laser that Sony has one of the largest blue laser diode production plant's in the world.

Sony added other thing's to the format but Blu-Ray is far from "just a sony only format"

I believe that is not correct and I would appreciate if you could clarify that with a link.

Ah I see, I stand corrected in that sense. So they just played a hand in starting it but don't benefit from it because of exclusive rights or anything.

yea, sony went with Blu-Ray because Sony has been investing into the BLUE laser optical format's since 1997, Sony's first Blue laser based optical recorder not just a player but a recorder went on sale in asia back in 2003. the disc's were in a cart to protect the disc from scratches, until TDK mad a scratch protection than Blu-Ray did not need the protective cart. anymore.

the unit was

the BDZ-S77

the spec's

http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/bdzs77/index.htm

Sony announced that it is to begin sales of the world's first Blu-raybased DVD-recorder next month. The recorder,BDZ-S77, which enables the consumers to record two hours of high-definition 1080i video at 24MBps on a blu-ray recordable disc, retails at around 450,000 yen ($3,800).

The product is aimed at consumers, who wish to record high-definition digital satellite broadcasts at the best possible quality. The release date in Japan is April 10th. So far no date has been given for an international release. It is unlikely that this particular product will ever hit shelves outside of Japan.

The drive is capable of reading Blu-Ray, DVD Video, DVD-R/RW, CD, and CD-R/RW discs. It can record on Blu-Ray discs at bitrates ranging from 4 to 24Mbps, which translates to 2 to 12 hours of recording capacity. There's only support for Blu-Ray recordables -- DVD-R/RWs cannot be written.

^ I see. Makes sense, I was concerned with the way they marketed each piece of hardware. They showcase each as 'the future', when clearly only one will survive, therefore taking the consumer along for the ride. But like I said, that's business.

That is not true at all..just because Blu-Ray has been released does not mean CD or DVD will go away, it just means means that the formats are a slow evolution forward, and they will all still be around for quite some time. the very fact that Cloud computing is an advancement forward does not mean that optical format's will go away, nope because there need's to be a way to back up that data in the cloud, you may point out that there are many data storage server's in that cloud, but also on the same token each of those server's have to have some way to back up their data, local or remote that require's solid state or optical backup which optical disc's are cheaper per GB, and not as Volatile.

there is no clearly only one will survive, they both will survive and go hand in hand.

Well I was talking in the longterm, I know there is an evolution here and the older tech being gradually phased out (even if it's not totally). Good point with the Cloud computing though.

Interesting point. I must meditate on this........

not really since they giva a digital copy for the psp with newer bluray movies

Are you saying that supporting two formats is contradictory in of itself, or that it is contradictory in practice --by robbing each other of sales-- or, both?

Well, I have no reason to argue philosophy but I will say that because the PSP/go dont use Blu ray, the PSPgo won't be stealing from the Blu ray bandwagon.

The formats dont take away from each other and this isnt that hard to figure out.

Are you trying to say that less UMD movies will be sold? If so, then your point sort of makes sense, but I dont think that UMD movies are still made anyway.

game will be bigger. for consoles.
digital download its not here yet for games that are 25-40gb.
for some it would take a week to download it.

DD for portables it's more doable, games are 1.6gb max.

I kinda started on the premise that Blu-Ray rights belonged to Sony, and that the direction they took with digital only for the PSP would undermine what they did over the years in trying to push Bluray out (the philosophy). Seeing as many would believe (as I thought when bluray came out) that digital downloads/streaming would be the future for entertainment media, I thought they were introducing a direct competitor onto themselves. But, sony doesn't have exclusive rights or anything so I guess it started to become more of a mute point.

PSP Go is a portable device. physical media doesn't grant the handheld a fully true portable experience.

Blu-Ray is meant for at home devices. Digital will become more and more important moving forward in gaming, but Blu-Ray and the Go are 2 different platforms for different people.
