Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2: 80,000 polygons on each character

You don't know it yet because most of you don't have Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which is slated to launch on Tuesday (although we've heard of some people snagging it early from places like Target). But there's a video interview within the game that's well worth watching...

Thing is, even if you haven't seen this unbelievable action/adventure title on your TV screen just yet, you've likely seen videos and screenshots. Hence, you are well aware of this product's graphical intensity, which is - in our opinion - simply unrivaled in the world of next-gen console gaming. And in an interview with Naughty Dog lead programmer Pal England, we learn that the team has managed to push the PlayStation 3 and its uber-capable Cell processor to new heights. As noted by Examiner.com, the interview's juiciest segments include some very hefty numbers. Said England:

"Our characters they typically have eighty thousand polygons in you know, one character, like the main character. In total- what we try to push through to the graphics chip at one point two million triangles that we try to draw every frame. We do a lot using the cell processor."

That's...uh...a lot of triangles. And a lot of polygons. It's not easy to get a game to look this good and you can bet that Naughty Dog has once again set the visual bar for other developers to leap over, if they've got the guts to try. In addition, we've also heard that if the team does decide to work on a third installment - and we can't imagine why they wouldn't - they've said they can make everything look even better. That's downright amazing from where we're standing but we've learned to have plenty of faith in these guys.

this is amazing, the first game had 30k characters now 80k? graphics prowess increased by over 2.5 times confirmed?! ;)

Didn't wanna post this because frankly polygon count is nothing. It's the optimisation of your verticles that matter the most.
80 k for human chars is crasy though. Full char in crysis (including body, head etc. Is 60-65k) ... The enemies are likely less.

Check out my game about moles ^

Then God of War 3 will look like s**t compared to this, considering that it's only supposed to have 20k polygons.

I GOT U2! but I don't have my ps3 right now ...... DAAAAAMN :(

so much for tesselation 30k characters.
