Sony pumps £1m into Ratchet TV campaign

Prime time Saturday night spots secured as SCEE gets behind ‘benchmark PS3 title’

Sony is backing upcoming PS3 title Ratchet and Clank: Tools Of Destruction with a million pound TV campaign throughout the gifting season.

The platform holder has heralded the game as a ‘benchmark’ release for PS3 owners, and set its sights on a target demographic that covers the whole family.

“The ad will target 16-34 year olds, with a focus on Saturday night family programming, which draws upon a broad demographic of viewers, matching Ratchet And Clank’s target audience,” Sony product manager Lucy Garnett told MCV.

“One of the strongest aspects of Ratchet and Clank, has to be the quality of the visuals, and we wanted to showcase this in the TV ad, meaning it’ll be made up entirely of actual gameplay footage.”

The megabucks TV campaign will kick off on November 16th and last for a full month.

This will be augmented with a wide-ranging online push, which will include heavyweight coverage on gaming sites including Gamespot, Games Radar, Eurogamer and TVG.

Sony promises that the title will also enjoy a strong presence on broader reach sites such as Yahoo, Channel 4, and Sky Sports, to target a more mainstream audience.

“The title marries Shrek-style humour with a detailed and fun storyline to produce what we believe to be a benchmark PS3 title,” added Garnett.

“It’s this variety and depth that we hope will make it equally appealing to young and old, novice or hardcore gamers, and people who want a title that can really showcase what the PS3 is capable of.”

Good, no crying babies.

Nice job Sony!

Oh by the way, note that the campaign starts on the 16th of November while the game launches on the 7th according to wikipedia. Weird!

Good to hear. I wonder if 16-34 is really their target audience, I presume they've done their research.

I hope they set up Ratchet and Clank at all the PS3 kiosk's in stores. The graphics and gameplay (judging from earlier titles I've played) are very strong, and will turn alot of heads.

R&C's getting a big advertising push, good.

And it will actually be ALL GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE. Finally they're learning. I'm getting tired of pre-rendering or some forced joke + 2 seconds of footage that plagues commercials nowadays.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

That's really not that much money for ads at all ...

"Q. How much does it cost to run a television commercial?
A. That all depends on how many viewers are estimated to be in the audience, how much commercial time is available for purchase and how many advertisers want to purchase it.

According to a Forbes Magazine article published in 2007, a 30-second spot on "American Idol" was being sold for $745,000. During the 2003-2004 season, a :30 on "Friends" went for $473,500. You can buy a :30 on "Monday Night Football" for $323,000. The smaller audience for the WB means less money for spots: "Smallville" only gets $111,700.

At the other end of the network spectrum, a 30-second spot in the 2007 Super Bowl ran about $2,600,000.  (For the first Super Bowl, in 1967, you could have bought one for only $42,000 -- but that was in 1967 dollars, probably about $250,000 in 2005 dollars. Still a lot less than the current rates.) Those rates are just to run the spot once, you understand!

But daytime and late-night spots in local markets can be surprisingly inexpensive. In a medium-sized market, $5 per thousand viewers is not unusual. So -- a 30-second slot in daytime that reaches 10,000 viewers might cost you around $50 to $60. You may be able to buy "overnight" time slots -- between midnight and 5AM -- for as little as $1 each.

Edit: I remember watching CSI reruns on Spike last year and the Gears of War comercial must have run in every commercial break; this went on for (at least) a month. It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft spend more than $10,000,000 on Spike ads alone ...

Your figures represend the amount of money it costs to advertise on TV in America, in between some of the biggest shows, on some of the biggest channels.

I'm guessing their potential viewer limit would be anywhere between 5-10 times that of a British channel.

I'm glad Sony is finally marketing the ps3 properly. First they had the Heavenly Sword ad, then those new internet ads showing off Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and Blu-Ray, and now this.

Its the only numbers I could find ...

I wasn't saying the advertizement campaign wasn't decent, but it is probably very similar to what most large games that are released in the UK.

FINALLY NO CHILD MOLESTING!!...lol

Great MARKETING for a GREAT GAME
