Forums - General - Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

Yeah closing Guantanamo is a reasonably difficult task, everyone thinks its a great idea until it's suggested that some of the prisoners should be transferred to their state. He should achieve it early next year though I believe.

Tsvangirai was a front-runner though, and he would definitely have been less controversial as a winner. However the committee doesn't have to be predictable like that.

The committe doesn't have to be predictable.  But you'd like it to be someone on a list of reasonable contestants.

I mean... when you compare him to the rest of the Nobel Prize winners... it's pretty comical.

The thing that makes this remarkable is that nominations for the Nobel price close on Feburary 1st, so Barack Obama was nominated for the prize with less than 2 weeks in office ...

On another note... this is actually a prize which may shape policies. It makes it that much harder for Obama to attack Iran, for example.

I wonder if that was the intention? Somehow it would make more sense then (in a twisted kind of way).

Well there is speculation that this is a bit of encouragment for Obama to press even harder for peaceful policies.

@Kasz. I don't believe it's comical, perhaps premature though.

Well on the bright side.  The Nobel prize for Literature has been horribly biased against non europeon authors lately... perferring for obscure authors who don't even get published in most countries.

So this... kinda makes up for it.

No link yet, but it's not a joke. It's on breaking news at several websites.

My reaction was, WTF? The president of a country which is fighting two highly questionable wars winning the Nobel Peace Prize?

Of course he is first president (in a long time) of US to kiss russian ass and show the middle finger to Israel while supporting the myth of peace talks with arabs.

It's pretty obvious left wing will love him.

They seem to suggest that the prize was given for his fancy Nuclear Disarmerment speech.

Might have been why he won, but he had to have been nominated prior to the February 1 deadline, so... his nomination seems to be based entirely upon HOPENCHANGEYESWECAN.

Edit: HappySqurriel beat me to the punch, I see.

Wait, I think it's actually officially confirmed that it was at least partly the intention:

"Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland rejected suggestions from journalists that Obama was getting the prize too early, saying it recognized what he had already done over the past year.

"We hope this can contribute a little bit to enhance what he is trying to do," he told a news conference."

The thing is that by giving him the award "Too Early" they might actually be undermining any efforts he does make towards actions where the results could justify the award ...

You don't find it comical that he was nominated 2 weeks after he was president... and won without accomplishing anything.

I mean.  Go over a list of past Nobel Peace Prize Winners first... and you'll see how ridiculiously pale Obama's resume looks in comparison.

Anyone who won a prize for the same reason he did spent decades on achiving peace.

Aside from the "Hey they're about to make peace in the middle east" Israel palestine award... that ended up being premature by only a stirke of a pen and Ariel Sharon's hesitation.

I mean  it just goes to show how bad a president Bush was.  You win a Nobel peace prize just for not being him!

Make that three questionable wars. Obama just attacked the moon.
