The cult of celebrity has finally reached the very top of the world.... sad.

It's incredibly pathetic, but is it really any worse than the very non-peaceful Kissinger or Arafat winning it? Besides, Al Gore already won it on the basis of sheer celebrity worship.

But... at least those people won their Nobel Peace Prize after either working for several years towards something, or accomplishing something tangible. What did Obama accomplish to promote peace?

That is coming dangerously close to racism as I've come to understand it these past 10 months. I'll let it slide because I like you, NJ5... but only this once.

Yeah, mostly.

No link yet, but it's not a joke. It's on breaking news at several websites.

My reaction was, WTF? The president of a country which is fighting two highly questionable wars winning the Nobel Peace Prize?

It's not like he started the wars.

I mean.  I can't even name what he would of done to have won the Nobel Peace Prize though.  Unless you count not being Bush.

Oh and fun fact.  Theodore Roosevelt is the only person to have ever one the Ultimate Peace Prize (Nobel) as well as his countries ultimate military award.

Well it is certainly unexpected. Very unexpected.

o.O

Edit: Appears to be for intentions rather than achievements. I suppose his plans to end the war in Iraq, his extended hand to Iran and his work on closing Guantanamo Bay were what won it for him.

Oh man that's hilarious though... I mean the "better relations" hasn't even led to anything yet.

And people say that Obama isn't treated like a celebrity.

I'm wondering who pulls the trigger first.  Obama's best move would be to just reject accepting the offer.

However if republican pundits demand he does first he can't go through with it.

Edit: Oh he's just "humbled" to win.  This should be amusing to see how it plays out.

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

He didn't start them but he didn't stop them either... and by all accounts he's going to expand one of them.

One good thing is his position on Guantanamo IMO... but nowhere near enough to warrant a peace prize, especially as it's still open right now.

Guantanamo is still open?  News to me.  I thought it'd have been shut down by now.  That's disapointing.

They seem to suggest that the prize was given for his fancy Nuclear Disarmerment speech.

Which yeah, you'd like to see results from first.

I'd rather of given it to Morgran Tsviniana.  He could of kept Zimbabwe in brutal civil war with west support... and likely SHOULD have.  However he came to a peaceful agreement with Mugabe to slowly gain control and stop the violence...

All while his wife died in a tragic accident and it would be even easier to just lash out and cause violence.

Yeah closing Guantanamo is a reasonably difficult task, everyone thinks its a great idea until it's suggested that some of the prisoners should be transferred to their state. He should achieve it early next year though I believe.

Tsvangirai was a front-runner though, and he would definitely have been less controversial as a winner. However the committee doesn't have to be predictable like that.

On another note... this is actually a prize which may shape policies. It makes it that much harder for Obama to attack Iran, for example.

I wonder if that was the intention? Somehow it would make more sense then (in a twisted kind of way).
