Procedural synthesis offers plenty of advantages outside of small space, such as "infinite" level of detail models and the ability to make each texture and object truely unique.

Not to mention both the 360 and PS3 had some design concessions to be able to do this well.

Procedural generation kicks so much ass. I can't wait for Spore. Not only is Will Wright using procedural generation for almost everything in the game, he hired a lot of the hardcore procedural guys from the underground demo scene who make stuff like this. He's got a team of pros now. And he's got Brian Eno "scoring" the game with amazing procedural music. Man I love Brian Eno.

Procedural Generation is amazing but is fairly limited in application at the moment ...

There are algorithms that can generate almost everything to have a decent looking forestscape, unfortunately they can take hours to produce a single tree or leaf.

That would be for movie level CGI. Games wouldn't need to be that exact, at least until the uncanny valley is crossed. It's main use for now would be disc space saving, or enhancing streaming, but either way would just involve the data in games used right now.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

It doesn't use a graphics card as far as I am aware because the textures and pictures are developed on the fly using the CPU.

It says in the first post that one of the game's requirements is a GeForce4Ti (or higher) or ATI Radeon8500 (or higher) graphics card supporting pixel shaders 1.3, and I'm assuming that's the thing I'm missing. My computer has plenty of gigahertzes and RAM and so forth, but there's something in the 3d/graphics/whatever driver/card/whatever that doesn't like games. Most people who meet me think I'm a computer geek, but I'm actually terrible with understanding how technology works. =/

this is very interesting too

LOL

The amount of data to store the information about a single atom is immense

Well SpeedTree ( used in Oblivion ) is a " forest " engine that use procedural algorithm ...

@Parokki

Yeah, I think that this game require a good graphic card .
