I fully agree. The level of ultra-violence has gone off the deep end. In the developers/publishers defense, however, gamers are clamoring for it and it is selling... If gamers refused to buy it, ultra-violent games would end immediately.
I'd prefer to see games have a feature similar to the Gears of War option to turn "extreme content" on and off. Games could come out with two ratings then -- Teen and Mature... Parents, if they actually had a clue, could use the built-in console functionality to limit the ESRB level allowed. Games could read that at boot up. Gears, for instance, upon finding the console set to Teen as a maximum allowable setting would turn off extreme content by default.
I know, wishful thinking. Developers don't want to be told how they should deliver their "vision" and gamers don't want to be told what they can and can't watch... I don't suspect it will ever change.
I would add that I think developers are being a bit short-sighted, however, in their defensive posture of "I'll make it my way". The ability to get Teen rating would ultimately sell more copies because there are a few parents out there that DON'T allow their kids to play the more violent version.
