Forums - Sales - Wal Mart scaling back DVD displays latest blow to Blu Ray

I haven't bought any DVDs in a long time. Between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Youtube and torrents, I can find just about everything online. The DVR takes care of the rest. The quality isn't as high, but the convenience more than makes up for it.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Funny, the blu-ray movie your comparing it with is one of the worst blu-ray video transfers. 2 stars out of 5.

Try comparing it with a 5 star transfer

Another thing i dislike about digital downloads off any service is if you care at all about surround sound all downloads are only stereo audio tracks. Also how big is your HDTV? Its harder to see the difference on smaller screens especially the farther back you sit.

I dont have a BluRay player till I can open my PS3 Slim at Xmas. But I have watched Transformers and FMJ on BluRay. Dont get me wrong, there probably is a difference. But not one I can really see next to SkyHD and Live HD films. Saying that Transformers was better in 1080p than any 720p movie I have watched on Live. Hence why I'm waiting for 1080p Live movies next month. Just not really a noticeable difference when in the same res. 720p.

Meh Bluray will continue to have it's place as an alternative to sub DVD quality video streaming.

I cant tell the difference between watching a 720p movie off of Live and watching Sky HD or Full Metal Jacket on BluRay.

Perhaps you have a crappy TV or need glasses? The difference is glaring. The Netflix streams don't even look as good as DVD and I have a fast connection for the highest quality stream. It says 1080p but it looks gray and washed out which is fine for TV shows or low budget films but nothing epic.

you will be suprised how many people would be willing to watch a movie taped by a camera phone in the theatre.

I've never bought a movie from Walmart... they are generally cheaper elsewhere...

I get to analyze video frames and experiment with bit-rates as part of my job so I have a really trained eye for this stuff. Most variable video bit-rates I've experienced with PSN 1080p store downloads hover around 18mbps - 25 mbps. Don't get me wrong, it still looks very good, but compared to a 1080p blu-ray with bitrates in the 35mbps - 50mbps range the difference in quality can be quite staggering.

Congrats on your new PS3 slim this holiday. Let me know if you notice the difference with 1080p Live next month.

Perhaps YOU have a crappy TV or crappier internet than you claim?  When I watch Netflix Streaming content even the non-HD streams at full quality look better than DVD quality, especially on an HDTV.  When I stream HD content on Netflix like Heroes or other TV shows and movies I like, the quality is absolutely beautiful.  Like selnor said, it rivals or even surpasses the quality of the live HD showing of the episode on my Verizon FiOS TV service.

DVD will always be around, there are just too many of them to get rid of. I can see bluray phasing out.

I use Redbox all the time at walmart... I work there so it's not even a problem to return them

You're causing the movie industry to suffer. I hope you can one day discover the suffering you're causing people in Holywood .

By that do you mean this

J3979 : Holywood station, Northern Ireland Railways

Holywood station, Northern Ireland Railways
Holywood is the only “real” town on the railway between Belfast and Bangor – the other stations serve suburbs. The station is separated from the town centre by a dual carriageway built in the early 70’s. There are not many passengers in the off-peak periods. This is the 20.05 Bangor to Belfast Gt. Victoria Street.

It could be related to the age of the movie :p watch pirates 3 which was properly recorded and optimised for blu ray directly.
