Forums - Sony - So I was in Toys 'R' Us today and played a PS3 ...

I played a few demos - GT5 demo, the F1 racer demo (loved it) but as cool as the graphics looked, all I noticed was the interlacing. It was running on a Sony Bravia - probably like 27" - at 1080i. However, when I played the F1 demo, it dropped to 720p. What in tha heezy?

So, I roll to the tiny PS3 corner - literally, there are just two shelves - and really one and a half for games - and I looked at 90 percent of the games. And what did I find? At least 3/4ths of the games - even current ones - were running at 720p?! I didn't believe it! I did find Lair and the new NBA game at 1080p, but most games? Nah ... 720p.

What gives? Am I missing something? How in the world are the games, even on HDTVs capable of 1080p signals, only showing at 720p?

Please fill me in and discuss ...

Because the PS3 is just barely more powerful than the 360, and nowhere near as powerful as Sony wants you to believe. Only towards the end of the two consoles will you MAYBE start to see a substantial number of high-quality games with 1080p and 60fps.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Its a matter of the developer and resources used. It takes a lot of ram for 1080p. Most PSn games, and some retail games are 1080p but most will be 720p/1080i. The PS3 can do 1080p for the Blu-ray movies and all videos though.

I hear you madskillz...

Lair is in 1080p but it has slowdowns, so I have yet to be convinced that the PS3 can really handle 1080p properly. That could explain why most games don't use it.

PS: However, I have to wonder if 1080p is such a big deal except on very big screens...

^What starcraft said. Even Sony's top star Killzone 2 will be in 1280x720. It's not a bad resolution for games, but don't be fooled that the PS3 can do anything.

I hope you washed your hands after playing....... lots of dirty kids play with the demo stations in stores :)

GTHD and GT5 are 1080p, if I'm not mistaken.

@ Fazz
LOL - I thought you said to wash my hands because I was playing a PS3 ... haha ...

@ Makingmusic
Unless I was in correct, the GT5 demo I was playing was running at 1080i - that's what I remember the screen showing.

Interesting views ...

@NJ5
I hear you - I have a projector that does 1080i like a pro - but can't do 1080p. I am still baffled because I have read that 720p is better visually than 1080i - but I have tried it and have to admit - it looked much worse at 720p than 1080i.

I tried to adjust the PS3 settings, but they were locked since it was just a demo kiosk ...

Yeah, I noticed that a lot of PS3 games seem to only run at 30 FPS too... I don't think developers have it down yet to be honest.

Ratchet & Clank can do 1080p at 60fps, Ninja Gaiden Sigma can do 1080p at 60fps and the same with nba 2k8, and their are more games coming out that are going to be at 1080p and 60fps
