Forums - Nintendo - Demo Play renamed, fully detailed.

Again you haven't shown that Nintendo is following your idea, so saying that Nintendo agrees with you isn't going to give your argument any support.

Nintendo only cares about gamers views, not reviewers, and actually most people who play the game aren't going to care if the guide dies in that manner, as long as it doesn't end up restarting the level and wasting time, and respawing would prevent that.

Different genre, different audience, than with a horror game, with Mario it would be a perfect way, your way would just result in a lot of frustrated people. Nintendo wants to build long term customers, and upstream people, that requires making sure people don't get frustrated.

The fact that they patented 'my idea' but didn't patent yours does show that Nintendo is 'following my idea'

And yet gamers also dislike games that appear buggy, I know I would.

It seems both of us are certain of our point of view, luckily the game releases soon and we shall find out for sure

Patents don't always indicate the final result, in fact the way Kotaku and other media outlets are reporting, they are going more with what I am saying.

Most "gamers" aren't going to be using the feature, its for people who aren't skilled at games, hence the having to die 8 times before it activates, and they won't see it as a concern

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

The patent is from June 2008, and the pictures in the patent look like 3D Zelda, not 2D Mario. Obviously the implementation is going to be different a year and a half later, in a totally different game genre.

More options are always a good thing.

Or maybe the map marks which levels you used the Super Guide on, to motivate you to try to beat every level naturally to get some sort of 100% bonus.

Yep. Hopefully if you beat it with the super-guide, a green "L" flag shows up instead of a red "M" flag.

No one will call it "super guide." They'll just call it "using Luigi."

Poor luigi, he is already relegated to insignificance due to his more popular brother, now he will be associated with name calling and mental and physically handicapped casual players.

From the big ol' Miyamoto roundtable transcript up on IGN.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/103/1035760p2.html

"""Now, here's the Super Guide block. If you die many times in a level, this block will appear and you can activate the Super Guide for that level. When you activate it, you'll see 'video' of Luigi running through the level. Since this is World 1-1, the guide is running through the most basic of tasks, almost like an instruction manual of how to play a Mario game. At any point, you can take control of the demo, so now I'm playing Luigi. What the Super Guide doesn't show is the secret areas, it's meant as a way to show novices a way to complete the level. But in the demo you can explore all the hidden areas. If you left the demo to run all the way to the end, it would give you the option to start the level over to clear it on your own, or if you just wanted to use it to get through the hard parts to finish the level and continue, you can do that.

I will say that when the Super Block icon appears, I feel regretful and guilty that I let that happen. I've often found that when that happens, that it inspires me to do better and clear it on my own. People who play the game without letting a hint block appear will get a little special something on the title screen after they finish. There'll be stars that'll appear on the title based on special things that you did in the game, and that's one of them.

As you collect star coins in each level, you can use the star coins to unlock additional movies that are created using a similar system to the Super Guide. These are called Hint Movies, and these show highest level of gameplay that testers and developers have achieved in the game. Things like Infinite 1-ups and Super Skills and locations of Star Coins. We have a video of these Hint Movies cut together showing off some of the testers' moves. """

The important bit for those who doubt this can be used as a free pass, is bolded. Miyamoto clearly says that the game gives you an option to either go back and redo the whole level yourself, or simply "finish the level and continue."

But there is an acheivement system, which includes a star on the title screen for beating the game without making a Luigi block appear at all.

I have a feeling beating the game with all the title screen stars will be a very difficult task.
