Forums - Sales - Sorry guys, the last PS3 "price cut" was a real one...

Wow, once all the fanboy smoke clears, it is obvious that Sony has gotten serious real fast... An immediate price cut on the 80 wasn't even rumored to happen any time soon as there is still 60 gig stock out there. I think Sony realized that if they let this holiday go to the 360 (and the current sales trends were pointing to that reality) and didn't drop prices, they might have allowed Microsoft to take such a commanding global lead that the PS3 would never catch up and 3rd party exclusives would be jumping ship left and right...

One thing is really interesting about he new pricing and that is that it puts Microsoft in an interesting, and in my opinion, uncomfortable position. That is that they are now priced too close to the PS3. Yeah there are a lot more games on the 360 and that certainly helps, but there is no doubt that a lot of people would like to get the blue ray player as a bonus.... The Elite will be MORE than than the 40 gig PS3... Add to this the fact that the lowest priced 360 is still more than the Wii and it puts MS squished in between and historically this isn't the best place to be.

One thing is for sure -- the "arcade" and the new premium with 2 pack-ins is a nice start, but Mavel Ultimate and Forza 2 probably aren't going to win many over...

I suspect we will see something totally out of left field from Microsoft in the next 30 days...

Even if they cut the elite to $399 it has to go head to head with the PS3 40 gig. While I think it can, for the most part, fare well against the 40 gig unit, a whole lot of people are going to look at that blu-ray drive, scratch their chin and say hmm.... that PS3 is looking pretty attractive right now as there are now actually some games to play...

You are hot today, once again, I just agree with you :o)

I (personally) expect Microsoft to ride-out the holiday season because their stronger game line-up and lower price will give them enough of an advantage over Sony ...

I would expect a price cut and possibly a more compelling bundle (Gears of War and Forza 2) early next year in time to boost sales leading up to the release of GTA 4. Microsoft could probably get the lion's share of GTA purchases if they have a $300 console that is bundled with some really good games ...

IMO KN, The 5 free blu-ray offer for purchasing a PS3 holds more weight than an average racing game and a bargain bin action adventure game, but thats just going by the logic that you will be able to fetch $50 on Ebay for the movies and $40 for the games.

Edit: It's more of a toss up to me now since you get the games as a pack in as apposed to a mail in for the movies.

I'll say it right now, and look at my post history to see verification, I've predicted every Sony move this generation.  I knew the media would get slapped in the face with the 80 gig going down the $500, when the 60 gig was exhausted (In my area, half of the places have the 60 gig in stock).  So flame on...

But sony outright said that there'd be no price drop this year.  Then they introduced the 40GB model which they've obviously been planning since Microsoft blew the whistle on them in July and dropped the price of the 80GB model to $500.  I guess that means they lied.  Again.

Also, the truth about the BC removal comes out:

Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system.

So Sony conceded that BC wasn't removed to save money, it was removed so people wouldn't be able to buy a PS3 and play PS2 games on it.  Which Sony, I guess, doesn't want anymore.

I think Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are highly overrated... I doubt they'll have a big weight in the console war, after all not everyone has a huge TV where they can see a big difference between cheaper DVDs and expensive next-gen discs...

Same thing with 1080p, from what I've been researching (I'm about to buy a TV), most people don't recommend spending the money on it except if you want a very big TV and you're planning to watch it from one or two meters away.

PS: I'll probably buy a 32'' HD CRT, which goes up to 1080i resolution and as an added bonus, doesn't need to do upscaling of 480p, it displays it natively since it's a CRT. That's great for Wii games, no jaggies or fear of bad upscaling! Cheaper than a Plasma or a LCD, with HDMI, component inputs and everything...

And what do you think they should have said to not be liars "ohh we'll drop the price of this one in mid october and introduce a new sku in mid november , so plz don't buy consoles now , but rather wait for the price drop" ?? I'm sorry , but Sony actions here were just usual business - if you want to call them "LIARS" for that , then plz don't restrain yourself , but don't expect the other companies to act differently in a similar situation.

In the second part it clearly says "entry-level PS3s" , so I guess they will still offer PS3s with PS2 BC for those who want them ,but not at "entry-level". Your harsh conclusion "it was removed so people wouldn't be able to buy a PS3 and play PS2 games on it" doesn't seem to be quite right there in my opinion.

No shit, now tell us something we dont know

 PS3 price at MGS4 release - $350/$450.  360 at same time...  $250/300/400.  Wii... $200.

80 or 120 gig will be released after 60 gig runs out in Europe / Japan.  Mark my words...

So you're predicting that in the first fifteen months of the PS3's life, it will drop $250 while the 360 will only drop $100 in the first 27 months of its life?

Uh, no. Don't expect for Sony to drop the price of the PS3 again for quite some time. They're going to have to stop hemorraging money sooner or later. Also, expect to see a more significant drop in the 360 price than another $50.

Reading comprehension for the lose? It still saves them money, just not the $100 of difference between the 40gb and the 80gb. People are intentionally taking this quote out of context to say that the BC was removed for no reason.

I agre, pig.  Sony's last cut was $100 and Microsofts was $50.  Sony's second cut was $100 and Microsoft has added some pack-ins.  The net result is they are on parity price-wise.  I'll be surprised if Microsoft doesn't "revise" their offerings going into the holidays -- perhaps with a monstrous Hd-DVD add-on deal or something like that.  I know MS wants to get to a point of profit and I suspect they will want to ride out the holidays and try to bank as much as possible and then act after the new year.  They would then have at least 1 quarter of solid profitability and something to show to shareholders.  They would also have to act and be able to justify it based on Sony's hemorraging money and having to stay in the race with them.  Also, make no mistake... with Sony's fresh price cuts, they are burning some serious cash.  The financials will be interesting indeed....

I hate trolls.

Hmm, I wonder where are all people who were bitching that 80 gb sku won't be cheaper when 60 gb is phased out. All these quotes of Kaz Hirai etc. It was marketing all the way - I was talking about it from the very beginning. Seriously I can't believe people expect manufactures to confirm further price drops...

I didn't ever say that Sony wouldn't drop the price, but I did argue that they could choose not to because it could look bad if they had multiple price cuts in a given year ...

I just went to Best Buy Canada...

80Gb ($499) is now cheaper then the 60 Gb ($549)...

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?logon=&langid=EN&catid=24376

This will help Canadian sales...

Well, at the current exchange rate it should be $490 and many analysts believe that in the near future our dollar could be high enough that the correct exchange would be $475 or possibly $450 ...

I'm not complaining, it is understandable that all companies want to be (somewhat) conservative and Sony is (at the moment) the company that is ripping Canadians off the Least ... ($10 PS3, $55 XBox 360, $25 Wii)

Just for the record, Sony was ripping off Canadian consumers the most until today.  360's received an extra price drop in August because of the Canadian dollar rise.  In July when the dollar had already risen Sony did not do anything extra for Canadians.  Nintendo hasn't changed a thing.
