Ahh, are you sure about this one? The previous Final Fantasy game (FFVI) which was released on a system with +40 million userbase worldwide only managed to move 860,000 units outside of Japan. I wouldn't call that "a MASSIVE worldwide appeal".

So, to reiterate my previous words in a more understandable way; Final Fantasy VII STARTED this mass appeal for the franchise, not the previous games in the series.

And the hype machine goes into overdrive!

and someone will "remember" how "all the Sony fans" were claiming that U2 would be as big as FFVII.  It's the eternal marry go round that makes me wish I could thrust my fist through the computer and slap some people.

Is this thread for real? Uncharted 2 will one of the best game this gen but to hype this game up to FFVII level is just insane. Not even close. It will move hardwares but not even close to FFVII level. Plain and Simple.

I dont think we will ever see a game effect a console or gaming like FF7 did, ever again in terms of transcending genres. People who didnt even care for JRPG's ate up FF7, it was a phenomenon a nearly perfect game.

One question is yet to be asked though...

I think the actual answer from all you would be a simple NO.

Will it move hardware? Maybe a little, but not at the level of FF7. Also, Out of my curiosity, how much consoles were already sold by the time FF7 came out?

it had a 100 million dollar marketing budget, that's absolutely unheard of even today.  It's really not that surprising.
