It's the best story in the series, and has three of the best villains in Gabranth, Vayne, and Venat. Gabranth is the best-written character in the history of the franchise. Basch and Ashe are two of the best heroes, and it is one of the most thematically tight and consistent games in the series since FFIV.

It's not just good, it's legitimately great, a crowning jewel for the franchise, and it always frustrates me to see so many people who miss the point of it.

I couldn't agree more. I thought the entire game was brilliant.

With every playthrough the game, for me, it just gets better and better; now ranking among my favourites. For instance, I discovered bits of dialogue that I hadn't really read before that'd shed light on some characters that I perhaps missed the time previous.

I like your comparison to FFIV in terms of consistency, though there is one area where FFXII falls short in comparison... music . Don't get me wrong, FFXII has fantasic music - brilliant, even. But FFIV was nothing short of, uh... whatever is better than brilliant. Perfect!

I liked this game a lot, I though the story was good and I found it interesting to show political themes and how a small country was under the pressure of two empires.

I also liked that for once, the characters where not like "awesome" and where made more as normal people, I like when characters are awesome like Cloud in VII, but it was good to have a change.

Also, the graphics were great, the VA was one of the best in videogames and the music was awesome too.

Ive heard some complains about the gameplay, but it seems it only bothers you when you play the game extensively to a point where the main storyline could have been easily finished way before the problem starts.

Overall its an awesome game for me, over 9.0 if I had to be a reviewer, a good Final Fantasy game too.

This is a good job highlighting a lot of the positives (in my opinion) of this game.

FFIV's music is better, I can make no argument. I am glad that we are in agreement that they are comparable in other ways, though.

@Pearljammer

You've got a point there, because, barring Dancing Mad and Aria di Mezzo Caratere, Battle With The Four Fiends is one of the best musical pieces in all video game history xD

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

Well, to answer everyone's question, specifically Khutra's, I do like those kind of theme historically, however, coming from a video game, its meh..

Out of curiosity, how many games have you played with those themes, exactly?

I actually have never played a game like that, but IMHO, it doesn't seem interesting. I want a story in which the character develops. A game that has historical theme, but mixes it with its own flare. Personally, if a game doesn't have that, then the story is boring and most likely be a let down. Sorry for the misleading statement, what I meant to say was that I don't expect it from a game. There are a few games that use the empire rise and fall type story (I forget at the moment). Honestly, its never worked because, they are either to predictable or he characters aren't interesting enough.

Now let me ask you the question. From many statements from the board, the game uses a historic theme. Do the characters develop? Is the story adding its own flare? More importantly, is gameplay good?

Yes, the characters develop - more genuinely and better than any other game in the series. The story has its own flare, and it is again the best in the series.

The gameplay is whatevr you want it to be. You can work with Gambits or you can input all commands manually, just like in every other FF. Your choice.

And for the record, you can't pass judgment on a mode of storytelling in a medium where you have not experienced it. That doesn't make sense.

I guess I'll give the game a try, thanks.

I do not necessarily recommend this game for everyone. There are many people who simply don't get hat the game is trying to do, or for hwom the tone of the game will not be a good match. Try it, if you like, but I make no guarantees that you will like it.

I'll try it. If I like it, that's great, another great FF added to my collection. If I don't, then whatever..
