But imo they're not alienating 50m handheld gamers. They just provide another platform for those who feel that DD is for them. They are making profit on every PSP Go from day one, they are making profit on the PSP 3000 and they will support both. I just dont see how they can justify giving away free games to 50m handheld gamers just to feed off of PSP Go HW profit.

With its launch price, don't you think PSP Go would suffering what PS3 experienced when it launched? Too expensive for general consumers and have a slow start. Only this time Sony is actually making money off each hardware sold.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
This was Sony's idea, so they probably should have done the homework before mentioning it to the public.
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

What is it that's so upsetting about the fact that a PSP model you don't own, as a current PSP owner, that upsets you guys so much that you whine about a model made for new PSP customers? Are you so determined to own multiple PSPs? Do you think the average joe is as desperate to upgrade as you, a poster on VGChartz, are? Are you upset that the form factor of the Go, and the ease of not having to carry UMDs around with you will cost you not only a new handheld, but also doesn't include... what? A library of games you've purchased but... have never played? You got a stash of unplayed UMDs you're upset won't get freebie upgrades from a company which doesn't even own the rights to give you such a thing, on the vast majority of games you likely own? |
You must not be aware of the power of upgrading a console to a new model. It isn't just VGChartz. It's everywhere. I wonder would the PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim have been better off getting rid of the drives and become DD only? It sure would attract the new customers, however big that market is, but it would alienate everyone that did upgrade to those slim consoles just for the new look.
It's also a detriment to gamers. As UMDs go down in price and get clearanced out, PSP owners have their choice of pricing the market on both fronts and grabbing UMDs on the cheap. If you think the DD market is going to follow suit, you're foolish. Really the only thing the PSP Go gamer gets is the compact handheld, but they lose out on every other conceivable front and are paying more money to do so.
@ saicho - Yeah the PSP upgrade is like PS2 ---> PS3, but this time they're not entering a new Gen or have upgraded HW that dose some games unplayable on the PSP3000 (PS2). And they make money off of it from day one. No one is hurting, everyone wins. Its just a facelift and any sale is a good sale. They dont need to start over and again and try to gain a solid installbase and ship tons of new PSP games. So for them to give away free games to 50m psp owners just so that they can upgrade seems like a stupid move atm.

First, the PSP-3000 is still available. This is a side-grade, not an upgrade, unless you want what the Go has to offer. If the PSP-3000 and its UMDs appeal to you, as a consumer... you can buy it (at even more retailers, apparently). I have to disagree on the upgrading for look/feel being a major player.. I don't believe that it is. In any case, upgrading hardware isn't in any hardware manufacturer's best interest, because console hardware is almost always sold at a loss... Even the Go's high margin most likely merely goes to the retailer -- I doubt Sony sees much of it at all, or big retailers wouldn't even carry it.
Second, DD prices will come down if/when it takes over. We have capitalism to thank for that. Competition and the basic laws of economics -- profit will be greater without CoG, resale/used, and retail margins (MUCH greater), thus competing economic bodies will have price as a stage on which to compete, plain and simple. Look at Steam, as an example.

So what are we arguing about? Why the big deal of not being able to upgrade and receive free games doing so? If you own a PSP why would you want another PSP that will by your estimates will have a poor DD market, and an inferior experience due to lack of other conceivable aspects? Which brings me back to my point of this product being for New gamers.
I think a lot of people are looking at the Go the wrong way. It plays music, videos and they're adding 'mini' games to PSN. What does that sound like to you?
What new gamers would this attract? The price tag alone is enough to scare away most people. The lack of a touchscreen makes this a bad device for social networking or web browsing. The demographics for this device is incredibly niche. Sony needs a device that appeals to the many, not the few.

It sounds like an iPod touch, lacking the most important feature, the touch.
