Forums - Sony - Sony America scraps UMD-to-PSP Go conversion plans

PSP GO! id dying even though its not yet released,

Yeah, I've never seen a system lose so many potential customers before being launched.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Agreed.. But SONY obviously want users to move onto this.. so they can cut down on piracy.. there isnt really much other reason for this SKU to exist otherwise...

if people can pirate games from the nintendo shop then they can pirate the games for the go. it will probably be easier than pirating disc based games.

When the PSP go came out, I flamed the hell out of it loudly, this being one of my major talking points. I was countered by most of this entire forum, and marginalized saying that it was a foolish argument, and that Sony had already SAID they were going to give PSP owners their old games on the Go.

Boy, when I'm right, I'm right.

The Go has always been an early adopters handheld. Almost no improvement over the old model, a smaller screen, and a much larger pricetag. It's death is a blessing, not a curse, and the reason Sony isn't giving you your games, is because the people will still buy this thing, will probably buy those games again. Being thrifty obviously isn't their strongsuit.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Well isnt the PSP Go for new customers? And since the PSP 3000 will remain on the market and supported, why would you as a PSP 3000 feel that its your "right" to be able to upgrade and demand that SONY gives you digital copies of your entire stock of PSP games?

Just doesn't add up.

If they were to discontinue the 3000.. sure they'd want to keep all their already existing customers, but since the 3000 will remain alive and supported i dont see how it would be their duty to make sure you receive all your existing games as free digital copies, just so you'd be able to upgrade.

If you want to upgrade, upgrade. If you dont want to upgrade, then don't.

It's for new customers now, but it could have been for existing customers also. Sony is limiting the market on this thing by boxing out existing PSP owners. Do you really think it's wise of them to potentially be alienating 50 million handheld gamers?

The world saw an upgrade that was still backwards compatible in the form of the DSi. I think most people expected the same sort of new console/upgrade- something that could play classic games they owned while still taking a step forward.

I should think by now loyal Sony fans are used to being well and truly shafted.

But imo they're not alienating 50m handheld gamers. They just provide another platform for those who feel that DD is for them. They are making profit on every PSP Go from day one, they are making profit on the PSP 3000 and they will support both. I just dont see how they can justify giving away free games to 50m handheld gamers just to feed off of PSP Go HW profit.

The process, workload, and costs it would take to develop a UMD to Digital return program for the gain of PSP Go HW profit, just dosen't add up. They'd be in the Red in no time.

That's irrelevent since the other PSP models can also do DD. Why would you upgrade your model to do something your current model does? As far as I can tell, the PSP Go does one thing the other models don't. It folds into itself to become smaller.

Also an inexpensive trade-in program could be very simple. Amazon does it with trade-ins on used games. You mail in your games, you receive codes in return. Anyone too lazy to utilize the program obviously doesn't want to upgrade their games that bad. No need for store kiosks and convoluted get 3 games for registering an old PSP gimmicks.

^^ I'm with MAFKKA on this one.

What is it that's so upsetting about the fact that a PSP model you don't own, as a current PSP owner, that upsets you guys so much that you whine about a model made for new PSP customers?

Are you so determined to own multiple PSPs? Do you think the average joe is as desperate to upgrade as you, a poster on VGChartz, are? Are you upset that the form factor of the Go, and the ease of not having to carry UMDs around with you will cost you not only a new handheld, but also doesn't include... what? A library of games you've purchased but... have never played? You got a stash of unplayed UMDs you're upset won't get freebie upgrades from a company which doesn't even own the rights to give you such a thing, on the vast majority of games you likely own?
