Most people could care less about codecs. Most people don't even know what a codec is.

The music market is so yesterday anyways. The real bread winner for Apple is the iPhone. A single iPhone can probably make 10x the profit of an iPod. That's where Apple is crushing Sony. While Sony does produce a lot of phones, those phones make no money. Apple is making billions in profit from its phones while Sony is losing money.

I know the general consumer doesn't know what codexs is, but that does not matter. What matters is that an MP3 player is made to support as many different formats as it can so a customer can jsut throw an mp3, ogg, and aac formated music file onto their MP3 player and they all work 100% without needing to convert them or use anything extra software to add the songs to the player

And you are right, the iPhone is Apple's claim to the mountains of money at the moment. That does not mean Sony does not make money on each cell phone sold, even the ones at Walmart that are free if you have good credit. The reason is that Sony gets paid by Verizon, AT&T, or whoever for the phone purchase from the money received in the contractual payments received by the phone owner. Also with the advent of Google's entry to the phone market Apple has a ton of competition since every manufacturer is virtually dropping Microsoft's mobile OS for the Android which features functionality that far outreachs Apple's and has an app store full of great goodies. The iPhone is only as good as the software, unfortunately Apple's software is outdated by Google's linux OS Android.

Sony Ericsson has been bleeding money for quite a while, so... no, they don't make money from phones these days, on the contrary.

wow, from the sentiments from this topic I will be getting a PSP Go. For about $100 new from the stores after it fails and stores just want to get rid of them. Though I tend to agree with the sentiment about ownership of the physical medium. it's nice able to trade.

there is a difference between making profit and making revenue. I just posting out that even on the phones that get sold for FREE bring in revenue.

Fair enough, but the post you were replying to was talking about profits, not revenue.

You care about codecs and music conversion. 90% of people probably never convert or need to convert music formats. All they care about is finding a few songs that they can find easily and play. File formats are not a factor in their purchases. They will buy an iPod because it's easy to understand and they have confidence they will be able to use it. That same confidence does not exist with other players, which is why Apple can charge a premium.

The difference between Sony's phones and the iPhone is that Apple has a FAT contract with AT&T where they get an insane amount of the pie, whereas Sony probably gets a few crumbs. When you have the hot phone, you can negotiate these type of sweetheart deals. AT&T knows they are screwed if they lose iPhone exclusivity, so they pay through the nose. Sony has to take whatever the phone companies are willing to give, which isn't much. They would lose Sony phones in a heartbeat if they could get a cheaper contract with another company.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Off Topic: well lucky AT&T's contract with Apple is nearly over so Verizon should be getting that pie next.

On Topic: I disagree with your iPod purchase statement as an ease-to-use thing versus a brand-name thing now-a-days with its general target audience.

The iPod/music market is not the blue ocean anymore. It's a quagmire. There is no point in Apple putting more resources into developing that market. The return on investment isn't gold anymore, it's copper.

The phone market is where the big bucks are. That's why they are focusing so much on it. If Sony wants to waste a lot of money on music players, Apple doesn't care because they can spend little and still beat the crap out of Sony. The iPod has become nothing more than the hand me down iPhone. And they still win with it LOL.

Downloading takes forever. If GT came out today, at 1pm, I could go buy it and have my license while PSP GO owners look at a "65% complete" screen.

I don't download shit with my PSP. I use my laptop or PS3 and transfer it. Is there ANYTHING good about the GO?

PSP Go is doomed, plain and simple

This. At a time when the PS brand, as a whole, is suffering, Sony really doesn't need this.
