Nintendo never sells for a loss (hint hint MS and Sony, you should follow this amazing strategy a 5 year old could come up with). And they have the most powerful software in the business, 3rd party or otherwise, which also make boat loads of money.

Since Nintendo first party games are so successful (Wii Fit 22 million alone, thats about 2 billion, more than the highest grossing movie of all time). I'd say they make more money on software, but they do make loads on hardware too.

yea, but the question was 3rd party game royalties. He didn't include 1st party software anywhere in his question.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

The reason they sell their consoles at a loss is so that companies with less financial clout can't compete (in theory). A company like Sega could never sustain that model of business, which is why they had to leave hardware. It worked for the first two playstations, they easily made back their money with software sales. Even when Nintendo was selling their Gamecube at a profit, they still couldn't truly compete with that strategy.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
