Forums - Gaming - EA to enter Console Wars?

Bite your tongue! The last thing we need is yet another console. I'm a huge fan of there one day being a unified platform on which all games would play.

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

I think one thing that people don't realize is that many of the sports titles probably require releases on most/all consoles. Madden has the virtually every console required in its contract.

If EA tried to restrict sales to a single console (its own), I would imagine its sports contracts would disappear.

And as I said. They could easily get through this by making the other console's versions really gimped.

Or they just wait till 2012 when the license expires( I doubt that they will get it back). And release their console in line or a little before the other consoles.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry to this.

Do you really think the NFL's lawyers would let them get away with that?

EA and the NFL signed a five year deal in 2004, then signed a three year extension to that deal in 2008.  What makes you think they won't extend the deal again?

The reason that I don't think that they will extend the deal is because ESPN is owned by Disney. And now since Disney has a good game division I do not see why they wouldn't just keep the license in house now.

'Night everybody!

The NFL deal will make sure EA stays out of the console wars. There's no way Madden would be exclusive to their console.

There are no rumours backing this up whatsoever. That said, I've been thinking for a while that EA could have a shot of being a console dev. They're also buying up devs all the time.

Some points of discussion:

1)What are EA's major franchises? Can 1st party titles like Fifa,Madden etc. be enough for them?

2)Financial risks and implications?

3)Affect this would have on Console Wars?

4) Are they big enough (compare for instance with Sega's size pre-Dreamcast)

etc.

PLEAZE STAY CIVIL

*peace*

1) As others have pointed out, their biggest games are only licenced to them on the condition they make them for all platforms

2) The company would lose a lot of money, then return as a 3rd party, but without the finincial advantage or size they currently have

3) Little to none

4) They're probably 10x the size of Nintendo
