Forums - Microsoft - Will the 360 get a slim version once it moves down to 32nm?

they don't need a slim, just eliminate the powerbrick

They don't really need a slim version. Their console is cheap as is so consumers wouldn't really want a new model and they probably wouldn't want to spend the millions on research and advertising

agree to all here and besides, there is the issue with the "cough" hard drive.

It terms of size, it sits pretty good and its not too huge, it may just has to do with the weight, not mass. A smaller power brick is definitely a good idea but theres really no point to waste $$ when its been out for 4 years alrdy.

Above I'm a proud Gran Turismo fan, not a Sony fanboy, and now a proud 360 owner, but sharing xbox live accts ATM

End of 2009 Predictions (made Jan 1, 2009): My predictions were pretty accurate, the 360 was over and the Wii was just under.

Wii: 65 mil (yea I'm crazy) 360: 35 mil (its getting there) PS3: 30 mil (the slim better do well)

End of 2010 Predictions (made Jan 7, 2010):

Wii: 81 mil  360: 47 mil PS3: 45 mil

sony will have ps3 slim 2.0 like they did PSP.

360 should be already 45nm, sony managed to pull it off, if they don't well.

microsoft its not mainly a hardware company, sony managed to pull it off because they have done it before, not only that, they are one fo the top companies it doing so along with samsung, panasonic, and lg.

microsoft have the money to do it, but they will want to invest into better build console? story tells me that won't happen.

just like they killed the first xbox.

Ahh, your distaste and bias against MS never ceases to shine through, eh?  First off, you know nothing about Sony and their chip die shrinking.  IBM manufactures their Cell CPUs, not Sony.  MS has their chips manufactured by TSMC.  I highly doubt Sony will do a second slim remodel.  That'd be unnecessary at this point unless they really can't cut costs anymore any other way.

Also, you say MS has the money to redesign the 360, but would rather use it into making it a better built console.  That's kind of treading on your own logic there because a redesign would be for the purpose of reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and improving the reliability of the console.  I'm not sure what story you're listening to, but it's broken.  And the fact they killed the first xbox early has nothing to do with this.  That was because of conflicts with Nvidia (the GPU provider in the original Xbox), which what do you know, is now the GPU provider of the PS3, so if anything watch out for conflicts with the PS3 not being able to drop prices because Nvidia locks the RSX at a high cost.  Also, the original Xbox lasted 5 years.... The 360 is already about to hit 4 years in just 2 more months.

@Prophecy

Sony denied any plans for a PS3 redesign just 3 months before it was revealed... I think it's safe to say if MS was working on a slim or redesign we wouldn't know about it.

you are ignoring all the engineering development. all the you can all the ships you want, actually many companies use the same chips look at arm cortex 8x and powervr graphic ship used in the iphone 3gs, Palm pree and nokia n900.

they all the same ship but only nokia have true multitasking even 4! desktops and its even better at video recording (pre got doesnt even video recording), yet they all use the same ship.

sony have managed to squeeze the console at 45nm making smaller than the 360 and with built in power supply, HDD inside, and a top class 17 fins fan. microsoft will able to pull it off? and on top of that making it reliable?

and sony developed in conjuction with nvidia the RSX actually sony it's not getting it chip from nvidia only but many suppliers.

There is really no technical reason blocking MS from making a slim now. However, the current 360 form factor thrives on custom made face plates, skin mods and such. If a slim form factor is introduced, all those things will have to be redesigned. A ton of people would be unhappy. What would people do with their Modern Warfare 2 face plate? This is probably the primary reason we have not seen the 360 slim yet.

Please take your off topic ramblings elsewhere.  None of that had anything to do with Microsoft redesigning their console.  Just because you think they can't do it, does not mean it is a valid argument as to why they won't do it.  And who ever said MS had to do it exactly like Sony?  Their redesign could be completely different but still more reliable and cheaper to produce.  Perhaps with Natal built in.

MS didnt make a slim with the first Xbox so i wouldnt be surprised if they never will make slim models. But never hurts to have a new look time to time =)

I agree with most here also, If Microsoft haven't released a slim 360 by now it will be very unlikely then..

Also by making the 360 slim the HDD has to be slim too and not making it compatible with older models..

Unless they keep the same HDD's width and install the HDD slot on top of the 360 slim while laying flat, but i won't think so..

Oh and before anyone claims it, I love the 360, not saying it's not powerful, just saying Microsoft sucks at DESIGNING hardware, not making it powerful. Anyone who claims they even remotely know what they are doing is lying.

They spent over a billion dollars trying to fix the RROD, and fired the original team who designed it because of it. However the original teams design was basically what I described, it was Microsoft putting pressure on them to make it as cheap as possibly which made it that way.

Not that it's cheap, original 360 cost 600$ to produce and they sold it at a loss, they just didn't want to sell 700$ machine at a loss when they could sell a 500 or 600$ machine at a loss.

PS3 manufacturing costs for 950$, they sold it for 600$, for contrast.

Woah didn't the 360 price loss, thanks for the knowledge.

While M$ spent $1 billion on RROD the PS3 spent 3 billion on original PS3 research and devolpment and another .25 billion for slim.

I love PS3 but the only problem is the 360 is built with customability and practical use in mode. Though both systems are aesthetically pleasing. the 360 is a score and has plastic-like body wear allowign first easy placement, less storage waste and plus all the  design packs. Newest ones being the cod MW2 and Beatles.

I just wish Sony woulld change their material to a cheaper covering but with different colours and styles.

I would easily buy a flaming ps3 or MGS4/ Uncharted to painted PS3.

Another thing is why do most product VG and other wise have sites to askk fans for opinions and new feature adds whileconsole makers don't.

Here's a freeby for you big three, do it and you'll boost sales. Who knows there might be a top notch indie engineer out there who just want a cooler console.
