So is this official Sony data or not ?

No, you can tell its incorrect by simply looking at GfK data. Afterall GfK gets a fairly sample from retail and i can't see them being off by 40 - 50%... not to mention SONY reports shipments / sales-to-retail not sales to consumers

Well, if those were actually SHIPPED numbers, then the sale numbers would even be lower then that.

Its a pretty large overtracking if this is true, do we have news from any other source?

Google Translation:

The evening of yesterday on Sony make.belive event was also the occasion when Sony Computer Entertainment Italy finally has a little 'unbuttoned' status of the installed base of PlayStation consoles in Italy, everything has been collected from the lips of his general manager, Gaetano Ruvolo. La situazione è la seguente: The situation is as follows:

- 4.550.000 PlayStation 2 - 4,550,000 PlayStation 2
- oltre 1.500.000 PlayStation Portable - Over 1,500,000 PlayStation Portable
- 680.000 PlayStation 3 - 680,000 PlayStation 3

On the latter figure, Sony has expressed confidence of achieving the target of one million PS3 consoles in Italian homes by Christmas 2009. Among the merits of this acceleration marked by Ruvolo figure obviously the recent price cut, even the fact that PlayStation 3 is substantially immune from the phenomenon of piracy contributes to the success of her second Sony flagship.

Other interesting data have emerged in the evening about PlayStation Network: 470,000 records are collected by Sony in Italy, corresponding to 280,000 unique users. Questa platea ha effettuato 7 milioni di download dal PSN, il 20% dei quali a pagamento. This audience has made 7 million downloads from the PSN, 20% of them to pay.

A margin account also revealed a trend of the market for video games in Italy and after +40% in two years ago and the +20% last year, is experiencing a difficult 2009, but apparently still slightly positive ground .

I'm not getting any other source on google regarding the sales figure, the only thing I keep hitting is the 10 million shipped figure for all PS Hardware (from PS1 up) this march. The make.believe conference did happen though, a tech blog made mention of it but that's it, do we have correlating sources?

It looks like quite a big overtracking, unless parallel import has been huge. I also wonder, do big megastore chains present in Italy but based outside it get supplies from Sony Italy or elsewhere?

Chart track/GFK has made errors in the past. Remember this?

Well, they made some adjustments to their numbers, but percentage wise the difference wasn't nearly as big as the ones we would see here. Also part of that error was made by Game by partly using the old numbers.

I think the number for the PS3 might be a reporting error as it isn't coherent with their stated goal of reaching 1M by Christmas (320K sales in 13 weeks vs 680K since launch is hardly justified by the price cut).

Something like 860K might make more sense (140K to go in 13 weeks, an historical average of about 8K per week)
