Forums - Nintendo - Core Gamers: Wii vs Gamecube

For the first time since I got my beloved Cube I felt like I don't want to be a Nintendo-man anymore. Just SO many crap games are flooding the Wii that I thought I'll just go back to Sony (sorry MS). Then I realized that it's the hardcore games we're after anyway, and we don't need more than 10-20 of them per gen. My mind went back to what made my Cube (I really did love it) so special and I thought a thread comparing killer apps for GC and Wii would be cool...

So I'll give my top 10 hardcore games for each platform and rethink my feelings (this is highly subjective):

Gamecube:

1. Metroid Prime - Best game I ever played. Anyone ever played it with surround sound or really good heaphones on a big-ass screen!? To this day it remains unbelievably immersive.

2. Legend of Zelda: TWW - It ruled my life for about 3weeks. Clocked in over 10hrs a day some days.

3. Super Smash Bros Melee - OMG. I had a house party once, and this baby attracted more attention than anything else. Teenagers left the party to play it. GOOD MEMORIES.

4. Resident Evil - Nr Uno was never my favourite (2+3 were untill 4 came), but this was a killer app that showed just why the Cube was superior to the PS2. It could take your breath away with its visuals, and scare you sh*tless without warning.

5. Super Mario Sunshine - I was too embarrassed to tell my friends that I'm playing Sunshine and don't want to be bothered, so I pretended to be sick - for a week. SOOO MUCH FUN.

6. Starfox Adventures - Sure, it has it's critics, but it looked amazing and the range of locales blew my mind. If it had Zelda's combat and smarter bad guys then it would be my nr 2. (Oh and better characters and voice acting for that matter)

7. Pikmin 2 - Good old Shigsy. I'm sure he had a 'power up' before having the Pikmin-vision in his garden on that auspicious day...

8. Viewtiful Joe - Big ups to Capcom for doing this. So original and fun.

9. Rogue Squadron II - Mind Blowing Graphics and Action for the time.

10. Super Monkey Ball 2 - Get some mates and show them what the Purple Box is all about...

Geez, 10 already. So many other BIG GUNS haven't even been mentioned: Prime 2, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero. Also, note that RE4 and Twilight Princess are kinda in between GC and Wii for me. When I think of GC I think of the above 10.

Wii:

1. Super Mario Galaxy - Welcome back to the top Mario!

2. Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess - Best Zelda game ever, but Link's screaming for an HD iteration. When oh when...

3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - An epic game that becomes an obsession to those who are into the series. The only problem is that the competition is in HD. Hmmmm...(ok, ok there's no competition!)

4. Resident Evil 4 - Oh yes. World class. The changes are brilliant. WD Capcom.

5. Super Smash Bros Brawl - Obviously didn't have the effect of it's GC brother, but it's definitely a perfect upgrade.

6. Zack and Wiki - Original, fun and expressive. Just how I like my games to be.

7. Super Paper Mario - Xbox and PS fans won't get it. They just won't get it...

8. Okami - Taking nothing away from this masterpiece, but if a PS2 port is up here, then things are getting a wee bit thin...

9. Mario Kart - Never one of my 1p favourites, but 2nd only t SSB in multiplayer.

Ok, so I stopped at 9. Guess I could put something there, but nothing stands out to me. I’ve actually realized that there only needs to be a small amount of AAA titles for the core gamer to be satisfied. Endless streams of crap Wii titles aside, I think that the core gamer has had enough (just about) until now. This point is debatable, but when Galaxy 2, Metroid: other M, NSMB, and other AAA software arrive, then Wii’s AAA’s actually stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Cube’s.

So do you think the Wii's lineup for the core gamer is sufficient or not? What about in the next 12 months or so? I know I want a PS3 as well, is this a failure on Nintendo's part, or just the status quo of the Industry?

RE4 really showed what the cube could do. It would be an inferior game right now if it was built for the PS2 at the start.

Check my game collection to see my preference regarding Wii vs GC.

^ WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST MARIO!!?? NO M64, NO SUNSHINE AND NO GALAXY!!!???

When Nintendo is bad, they're pretty F'n bad......but when they're good, they're the best! Gamecube and Wii offer some unparalleled experiences, no doubt about it.

Err I have M64 on VC, and Galaxy on the Wii.

On my Wii I have played SMG, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. Which game have I used my Wii for the most though? RE4 (Gamecube version).

Pikmin 2 is too low you also put a game twice. Also what's Super Paper Mario doinig there? TTYOD was way superior` Oh yeah Zelda is too high also ;-P My opion is right now change it ;-P

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true. 2nd UPDATE: I have no Switch 2. I am now behind

I never had a Cube, but I've been buying the games that interest me from the platform here and there. My Wii library crushes my GC library 3 to 1 before accounting for my considerable collection of downloaded games. I could make some recommendations to you if you're really hurting for core games. You even missed a couple great Nintendo games in your Wii list.

I am missing a few key GC titles. No Mario Sunshine or Windwaker yet, and I'm holding off on Rogue Squadron in the hopes that the much rumoured Wii compilation materializes one day. Factor 5 keeps sputtering out "I'm not dead yet" noises, so it's not a completely lost cause...

Personally, I think the Gamecube (Metal Gear, Metroid) had a superior lineup, but the Wii isn't done yet. The Wii's biggest obstacle is that a Wii game has to be outstanding to received accolades. An HD game just has to look good and do a few things right (hence my collection). In the Gamecube days, I was in awe all the time (it was a graphical beast!). I guess I was somewhat of a graphics whore and didn't even know it!
